Case in point, Halflife 2, which is my source of all of my hatred for Steam, and Valve, and believe me when I say this, steam is a long running DRM which has caused most of what we see today especially with Activision/Blizzard, EA, UBI, and a coupe for other power houses out there.
Back long ago in a town far, far away I just finished playing Half life, and I ran through the story, and killed anything that could be killed like a hot knife sliding through butter.
Later: I picked up my copy of PCGamer, and started to read my favorite magazine, and I absorbed every page I turned. I came across a preview of Halfife Life 2, and read that article, reread it, stared at the pictures, and I started to dream about how cool this game was going to be, and I was just itching for a chance to get my copy.
Release Day: I GOT IT! I GOT IT!...oh my God, have to install this. I put aside a full weekend for this, and I was going to have some fun.
Less than 2 weeks later: I started Half Life 2 because I had some time to kill. What the hell, I have been locked out. I sent off a support ticket to the Steam staff. They replied eventually telling me that I was using a CD key that was considered to be illegal. WHAT THE Bleep, i have the key right here, I bought this game, I sent them off all the information that they requested, and still nothing.
I soon went on the forums, and found out that many users were being blocked because of lost keys due to the hackers (those type of hackers are the one's I really don't like. I don't mind the ones who create NOCD's for games you own).
I asked "So what can I do to play MY game I bought?", Valve/Steams reply was "there is nothing we can do"... I finally figured out that I got royally screwed over like so many out there. I went on my small rampage kicking, and screaming on their forums telling people what had happened to me to help those to be careful, and don't look for help if your key gets stolen, and used".
Next Couple of Days: I was totally banned... Not to mention that there were several people who backed Steam, and obvisouly would die for Valve/Steam if they had a choice started to attack me on their forums... Dumb shits.
Now you know why I hate Steam, and Valve (one in the same).
Whole point in telling you this? I finally found a crack, or what some may call a NO/CD patch which allowed me to finally play HF2 the way I wanted too... I no longer needed to ASK permission to play MY GAME, which I paid for, and is MINE.
For those who wish to throw monkey poo at me, and curse me for using NOCD's, ask yourself this. Have you or still pass on songs to other people to listen too? If the answer is yes, you have no reason for flinging that crap at me, and please don't try to defend yourself with "Well everyone does it".
Also I know a few might want to ask me why I purchased SOW since it has DRM serial activation in place in order to play the game. My answer is pretty simple, I trust Norb, and NSD otherwise I would not have bought the game. Without trust, you pretty much don't have anything to stand on.
Nuff said I guess.
Very true. The only way to stop piracy is not to make the game in the first place. There are some great minds out there, and if man can make it, man can break it, or into it.thing is the games companys put it out that this drm is to stop piracy, whereas we all know it doesnt and never will.
Ditto. There is nothing wrong with developers protecting their product, and making money from it. What is wrong though is punishing the real legit users for something that may or may not happen by the pirates out there...case in point is assassins creed 2 which i quite fancied a go at when it came out untill i found out about the always on internet drm which meant i didnt buy it.i also didnt pirate it as;
1.ive no idea how!
2.i still belive games devs deserve their money.
Soooo true. Just takes patience, and a watchful eye. Many of the games out there that were once so heavily bound by copy protection are now easy, and ready to play, and cost next to nothing to buy.since then ubisoft have quietly patched out the ridiculous drm,i then bought the games for a fraction of their release cost, which i would have quite happily paid full price for in the first place!
Your not far off their redcoat.all this crap from blizzard and ubisoft and their ilk is plain and simple greed,i think.
...and they do. Mind you I'm not going to set myself up for slaughter here, but I have on occasion used, and still use NOCD's for games I own.when the pirates can provide a simpler, more stable version of the legal game with no hoops to jump through just to play, which they can! seems to me the games companys are about to let fly a volly into their own feet. cheers
