Interestingly i recently had an opportunity to use counter battery fire mainly because i had no valid infantry targets to shoot at can't remembee what my batteries consisted of but needless to say we wee playing Antetam and as i marched onto the south hill and engaged Palmers infantry i could not get line of sight woodland and a rise in the way, But my guys were taking a beating from arty fire in the valley from Beefstu's guns.

So i opted to turn my guns on his resulting in one gun destroyed and others having taken casualties.

BeefStu was on low ground while my guns had a clear downhill shot at beef. I remember Beefstu could not beleive i had shot away his guns with counter battery fire first and last time i have seen to work so effectivly.

The game does have counter battery effects. Guns are much more effective from an elevated position. I will have my guns at times target other guns and their will be an affect. You just get more out of the guns by targeting infantry.

Time is another factor. Willard can get results by counter battery fire after he has positioned his guns just right. It does take time. We don't have three hours a night to fight battles where we can let guns go at it for an hour.

Actually, I do think some games last three hours now. I would love to get that worked out.

In a stock game a long time ago Willard had his rebel guns on an elevated position. My Union guns being far superior, I chose to counter battery with him. He wrecked and drove off all my guns and in a short time period. There is a skill to using guns that most guys don't ever look at.
