  • It's been awhile since anything has been posted here concerning the mod. It regularly updated, but this particular version, 1.27, may be of interest to some. Cavalry scouting patrols can now be created and will automatically go off to search for the enemy. When they are found, they will send back a detailed report to the division player/commander giving their location, the location of the enemy, its direction of movement and the size and composition of the force they see.
More information concerning how this works can be found in the Player's Manual which is included in the mod.

The mod is available at the Kreigsspiel forum: KS Forum Site

I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

  • Thanks a million MTG!

I have the older version of KS MOD and absolutely love it.

Question, could you possibly state what exactly we need to have the new version? I'm asking because I remember the older version required a certain sprite mod, a certain maps pack...etc. for it to function. I'm a complete layman when it comes to computer stuff so this information would be really help if you could list what we need and what we need to delete. A list with links would be super helpful.

I have scoured their forum but nothing is in a central location stating EXACTLY what is needed to run the new mod.

    Thanks a lot again MTG!

  • The mod is in three pieces, KS Napoleon Mod II 1.27, KS Sprites Mod 1.06 and KS Supplemental maps 1.18. All are required. You'll find download links in the first post of the thread titled, Set Up for SOWWL NAPOLEON GAMES For Kriegspiel style. It's the first thread in the Scourge of War section of the forum.

    Great! Thanks a lot MTG.

Question, do we delete the old folders from the old game?

  • HI all

Will be posting some screenshots shortly for the recently updated KS mod. First will be the 1806 OOB showing some of the prussian contingents. I had hope to have included it with this post but I need to find a better filesharing site as the one I used didn't work. Shouldn't be too long.

  • Hi all
Below are samples of the 1806 OOBs which have units that fought in the battle of Jena. These are taken from the first division only and off course there are many more divisions than shown. I will update with more
screenshots taken from the other years of the Napoleonic wars presenting the different troop types available to the player. For example updates to 1800,1805,1806,1808 Peninsula wars 1809 and eventuall1813/14

    Enjoy

  • Hi all

Some new screenshots of the updated KS Mod. The following screenshots are a work in progress based on Napoleon's campaigns in Germany and Italy when he was opposed by the Austrian army in 1800. What you will eventually find is the French in their bicorne hats, new french artillery, new cavalry uniforms more appropriate to the 1800 era.

The Austrians are mainly in their pre shako helmets and both armies will fight in formations that are different to the post 1805 armies. The mod has the 1806 French/Prussian encounter completed which will give you an insight into what to expect from the 1800 era when complete. Both armies are included in the screenshots.

    Enjoy

  • Hi all
Some more screenshots from the KS mod which I hope you will enjoy. The first four screenshots are taken from a campaign game based on the 1809 campaign on the Danube. Initially a conflict between Lefebvre VII Corp who had come into contact with Hiller's Austrian Corps and as a result this was the force that I ended up with. I've chosen this battle to demonstrate how wide and varied the combinations of varying forces can be and how enjoyable it can make the game become.

The rest of the screenshots are from the Russia 1812 Order of Battle mainly from de Tolly's Corps. I've also highlighted some relatively new additions such as the Polish in the service of the French and some new cossacks and hussars. If you haven't already downloaded the KS mod I highly recommend it, mainly because it gives an opportunity to play many more nations and contingents.

    Enjoy

  • Hi roy64

No it isn't a new toolbar. The setting it was used in was different to the normal format when using the KS mod,and I was trying to illustrate mainly the variety of the different units available to the user of the KS mod. Sorry for the confusion

    Wow x 1000!

Great work - must try this mod. That feature has been my number one wish for years - it is the reason I joined the team way back but could never get it high enough up the priority list for patches and releases. Is it implemented for cavalry only? Edit - read the manual and see light cavalry only. Downloading mod now - lots of other interesting edits in there.

  • I totally agree Connor. This is a great addition to the game, and adds a whole new dimension to pre-battle manoeuvres.

  • yeh, really neat addition to the mod. i tried it out quickly there and it seems to work great. What is the biggest map in the KS mod Martin? I haven't figured out the 4L, 6L codes yet (MP player numbers?) but is it the GBurg 9 mile?

I'd like to try a game with the scouts enabled on a really bigmap

  • Thanks for the kind words. Yes, the scouting does make an interesting addition. The largest maps are the German Gburg and German Chattanooga maps. The random map designations 4L and 6L were just codes assigned by GCM. They don't stand for anything special as far as I know. All the random maps are 5X5 mi.

  • without revealing too much of the magic - whats the best way to use the scouts? If you place them at a junction - they will only see a bit of the enemy force at the head of the column before having to withdraw - if you place them offset/adjacent to a road with a good view (but with an open courier line back to you) - they should make a better estimate at numbers?

  • The couriers will hang around until the enemy, (non-officers), gets within 600-650 yd. before making a report. So in that case, they can give you an idea if the force they've found is just a brigade, errant battery or a division. They will stay at a safe distance and continue to observe, sending subsequent reports every 15 minutes or so. If you try and get cute and position the scouts where the column will pass by them, the enemy cavalry will likely see them sooner, target them and drive them away quickly.

I just send them out, either ahead of my column if I'm moving, or along the axis i think the enemy may be approaching on. This has saved me a number of times from blundering into a large enemy force.

I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

    Interesting Concept!

I would like it better if the Player was restricted to only a few scouts, and the scouts had to ride back themselves to report the enemy units.

This would force the Player to use them with a bit more caution.

  • There is a limit of 3, 50 man patrols per regiment. Losing that many men from a cavalry regiment has severe consequences during battle.

Remember that mounted scouts were everywhere, although the information they sent wasn't always received in time to be useful. IIRC Napoleon's right wing cavalry at Waterloo made contact with the Prussian advance guard at around 10:00am and sent this news off.. but for a long time it wasn't apparent what kind of force they were facing - but basically cavalry patrols were the eyes and ears of an army so I think its okay for a player to have several at his disposal.

Only light cav will send out patrols, but each French inf corps has a division attached.

HITS & Couriers - a different and realistic way to play SoW MP.

    True.

So, How are you Guys stopping the enemy units from showing up on the Map when seen by your scouts?

Do, they only show up after you receive the courier message?

  • Yesterday, I downloaded and ran the new KS Napoleon mod. It is fantastic and running just fine on Win7 on my PC.

I have a couple of questions:

    1) I'm playing French Scenario 2 vs. Russians. The infantry uniforms for both sides are washed out into a sort of beige. Is this supposed to be this way, or do I have a problem that I need to look into? This scenario has light fog and might be in the winter. Might the washed out colors be the Winter Sprites?

    2) If there are any historical User Made Scenarios using KSN, please direct me to the download page.

    Thanks very much.

PS The "Cavalry Scout and Vedette" function is working in fine fashion. Outstanding.

  • Since SOWWL has been updated to version 1.03, a newer version of the KS mod has also been uploaded, (1.275).  you can find the link on the KS forum.
It will only run with the new version of the game.  It does contain some improvements to the game.
    1. Artillery will not fire on units that are located in woods or heavy woods.  The game LOS is bugged and trees are transparent to artillery regardless of their depth.  This change allows units to remain safe from such fire.  It is somewhat unrealistic as troops on the edge of the woods are also invulnerable.  It is the best that can be done.  Note: units on the far side of such woods can still be targeted.
    2. Cavalry screening is being rewritten.  The stock game did not use this function very effectively.  Now individual regiments or a brigade can be assigned this mission.  The unit(s) will move to a point 300 yd from the division commander.  If the division is on the march, the screen will keep moving forward.  If the division is retreating, the screen will remain stationary until the division commander is more than 600 yd. away, when it will fallback to 300 yd.  This has not been rigorously tested yet, so there may be bugs.

I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

  • Thank you for this Mod. Can you please direct me to a download link and the instructions for installing the KS Mod? Will the Grog V Toolbar work with this Mod or does it come with its own toolbar?

Also, where can I read about the KS Mod? I really have no idea what it does, as I am new to this game. I have owned the game since it was released, however, I could never get into it, as it seemed really clunky. I going to give this game another shot.
