Game Question from Newbie

Sorry if my questions seem silly, but I grew up playing Avalon Hill board games and I am of a certain age that does not match well with computers. But I am a big history buff, and my main hobby is building miniatures. I have not played games so much over the past years. But I came across this site after visiting Gettysburg yesterday and Googling for games. The Avalon Hill Gettysburg game version I played was very complicated, and I always appreciated it's attempt at realism. My favorite game was actually Advanced Squad Leader.
So my questions are:
1) Is this a turned based game, or something else? I am trying to avoid games that are click fests and more of a test of how fast you make decisions than actual decision making that commanders make.
2) Will units arrive as they did historically, and will I be able to make decisions on where they go, or will there be a sort of tunnel that forces me to recreate what happened in history. For instance, after fighting and making decisions for three days, I doubt I would have a Pickett's Charge event.
3) Will there be a store version? I don't like downloading things and don't like paying things online. Plus, once I have the game, I want it forever. If it is only available online/download, do I have to be online to play it once I buy it? I just want it like a store bought game with no other requirements once I own it.
It seems like a very cool game, and quite beautiful.

Hello Burik,
This link will bring you o the Gettysburg game web page with a video.
http://www.norbsoftware.com/Gettysburg/
As far as question 2 and 3, Norb or one of the team developers can answer that better than I can.
Enjoy the video as this will be an awesome game !!!!

Hi. Welcome to the War3DII Gettysburg forums. Since I'm just sitting here drinking my second cup of coffee I'll try to answer some of your questions. Then others can add to or correct my answers. I still have my Avalon Hill Gettysburg game in my attic. No desire to get it out since these great new CW computer games.
I'm not associated with the company making the game; I've just been hanging around this forum for awhile.
This Gettysburg game development is headed up by a person that previously was a partner in the development two other CW games by a company called Mad Minute Games based on 1st and 2nd Bull Run/Manassas. The 2nd Manassas game "Take Command Second Manassas" was the second release and an improvement over the first game. You can download a demo of TC2M as we refer to it here.
http://www.madminutegames.com/downloads.htm
Go to the Madminute download choice in the list of available download sites. The demo will give you a general flavor how these games play, but the new GB game will have many improvements and enhancements over the previous games.
These are by no means clickfest type games. In fact some people I've talked to who are used to playing the clickfests have to adjust to the slower pace of this game. It is not turn based. It is played in real time. If you are commanding a bridage and marching it from the Peach Orchard to Zeigler's Grove it's going to take some time to get there. Things can get hectic, just as they did for the actual commanders at Gettysburg, depending on the action and your level of command, but it's no clickfest.
There will be historic scenarios where the troops start out as they were at a particular time in the battle, but once things start it's up to you what happens. You can go anywhere on the field you want with them on the map you are playing. Because the battlefield is so large it is broken up into four maps that cover the entire battlefield for use in the various scenarios and random battles. I'm pretty sure there will not be one overall map of the entire battlefield. There will also be random battles that are not historic to test you leadership.
I think a store version right now is up in the air depending how well the game sells and what Norb's company can negotiate. I've seen in previous posts that Norb will make it available on CD one way or another if people don't want to or can't download. I haven't heard any mention of needing to be online to play.

Thanks for the responses.
Will leaders capabilities matter? i.e, will it matter where I place Hancock? In Squad Leader, if you placed a better leader with a unit it was less likely to break, and if it did, it was more likely to rally sooner.
Likewise, will a unit's experience matter? Some units were green at Gettysburg and less likely to perform well.

I think I'm safe in saying the answer is yes to both your questions. The various commanders will be rated on their historic attributes and these attributes will translate into gameplay for the AI commanders. Of course, for the commander you are controlling or any human opponents in multiplayer the attributes will be determined by your style of command and your human opponents' style and skill.
Regiments in TC2M had various levels of experience, moral, etc. that directly affected their performance. I'm sure GB will be no different except I wouldn't be surprised if there are improvements in this area also over TC2M.

Burik you sound like me a bit unsure if this game is what you are looking for but I tell you what when I played the demo of TC2M I became so hooked on the game that swear I played the Gibbon scenario 6 times in a row and when I got the full game I couldn't stop playing for hours partly because some scenarios are several hours long and since the detail was so perfect. I will also tell you that Gettysburg top will top TC2M in how much more realistic the game will be the detail of everything and so on you are going to like both TC2M and GB.
Oh, Welcome to the forum.
