I found out after doing a little research that this movie was canceled because the profits off of Gods and Generals was very bad. Also I don't know if this is right Ron Maxwell would need over $60,000,000 to do The Last Full Measure. This thread will talk about what you wish could have gone in this movie or who could have acted in it.

I think it should include all the actors from Gettysburg except Martin Sheen he didn't do as good as Duvall in my opion, but there would be knew people Grant, Sherman Sheridan, Gordon, more of Hill, Griffin, Ewell, and believe it or not a little piece of Burnside.

It is too late now but I always think that an actor of Charlton Heston's stature should have played Lee in Gettysburg. You are certainly right....Martin Sheen was definitely miscast. Might say the same thing for Tom Beringer although I do like many of his roles.

On the other hand, I thought that Stephan Lang was superb as Pickett in Gettysburg and as Jackson in Gods & Generals (as well as a couple of westerns he was in).

I loved Sheen as Lee. I thought he captured Lee's excitement while in battle. I thought I heard that G&G had good DVD sales, but probably not enough to overcome the poor box office sales(I saw it in the theater).

I could see Russel Crowe playing a good Grant. He kind of has that rough, "grizzled" look that Grant had.

http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2003/GDGNL.php Here are some numbers from G&G, it took 55 million to make, so I could see a 60 million budget for The Last Full Measure.

Martin "lost his" Sheen playing Lee! I think the best movie he ever did was "The Execution of Private Slovik." But, Lee??? Hmmmmm

I had heard the same story regarding P&L on Gods and Generals. I just looked at the $ site you referenced and can understand why TLM was not made.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Robert Duvall, I think he played a great Bobby Lee. He looked just like him..

I agree, Russell Crow would play a good Grant.. I wish one of the big movie companies with a huge budget would do this film. Imagine the possibilities using CGI.. They could show entire armies, which they've never been able to do in Civil War movies. I think the biggest army I've seen in a movie was during Pickett's Charge in Gettysburg, but that was still only a fraction of the actual forces engaged.

During the 1988 125th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, I seem to recall there were close to 6,000 reenactors that took part in the recreation of Picket's Charge. This was filmed by a small company (can't remember the name of the company) and sold to the participants. We spent about one week there including a 3 am filming that I just saw (again) in a NEW production on the History Channel. It is about a ten second clip that show the Confederates behind a fence with the Federals attacking. I have seen this one at least three other times in other productions. Have to look closely but I can find myself wearing a tan "plug" hat as the Confederate C.O.

Same outfit filmed several 125th events including Shiloh that our unit attended. This was one of the best 125th that I attended! I am "beating tracks" away from the rail fence we were behind as the rebels came over the top.

Maybe someone will remember the name of that company.

And, yes, Duvall was a lot more believeable as Lee...at least IMHO!

I think the biggest I've ever seen is in the movie 'Waterloo'. It's old and was filmed in Romania. The filmmakers used actual brigades of Romania troops dressed as the Brits, French, and Prussians. There were A LOT.

My favorite scenes in G&G are:

1. Jackson is wearing his famous "bummer" with the gold braid around the base.
2. Jackson tears off the gold braid and gives it to the young girl.
3. Few minutes later into the film, the braid mysteriously reappears on the hat!

Wonder if the Continuity Editor caught a little flak for that one?

On Dances With Wolves first day, the "ponce bag" lady came around to give us all a good dusting...to give us that "field-worn" look. Then, the Continuity Editor came around and took photos of each of us. The next day, they reappeared checking to see if we were wearing the same hat, shirt, coat, etc.

They even did the battle flag I provided in the movie, "spraying" it with colored hair spray to give it that "field look."
