Hey guys.
I know I'm a bit late...
But I wanna say that with the latest revision of this awesome mod, La Souffel map is simply gorgeous!
Thanks to the creators from my side too. ;)

P.S. As a tribute to your work, a (very) rough implementation of waving grass. :silly:

Very immersive! This moving grass mod should have its own thread.

Thank you Conor. :)
But it's really a little pebble compared to the mountain of Crikey's work on this map...
And no, no new threads from me yet.
You know, that would look a bit pointless since I can't share anything.
I'm going to comply with the instructions given here by Davide during last summer (wait for Norb or Jim, basically).

Just a quick question out of curiosity.
Is it just me or the fences objects (D_fences.pro I think?), placed around the La Souffel level's towns, make the framerate drop by an unusually high amount (5-8 fps)?
That sounds very odd.
I mean considering their apparently low geometrical and shading complexity.
And there aren't many of them drawn on whatever scene either...
Nearby buildings seem to have an almost insignificant impact instead, for example.

Thanks again.
Ciao. ;)

Nevermind. All is clear now.
I was kinda wrong about that fence complexity.
It looks like several "dynamic" (LOD) instances of a >2000 faces object shouldn't really be considered as "low-poly" in the context of our old PR engine friend. :side:
Lesson learned.
The bottleneck caused by PowerRender::CNorbRend is quite gratuitous anyway imho.
It'd appear like yet another easy gain.
I'll maybe try to work around it...
Or replace fences with a 2D alpha textured rectangle?

That is quite Impressive looking terrain, I like the moving grass and the trees.

Regarding the fences, I have never know them to create a FPS problem, the maps can hold more than 40,000 of them without any loss of frames.

Try to make sure that there are no duplicate fences stacked on top of each other, by moving one out of place to see if another one is behind it.

The veg always ate up my FPS, fences were less problematic.

Well, same happening here Conor.
But I gained about 12-15 fps by re-engineering the entire vegetation drawing system...
And then losing at least 5 for a situation like this, believe me, that's a thing that really eat you!

I'm going to follow Davinci's tip and see if I can isolate the problem a little futher without resorting to my usual caveman methods... ;)

Can you post that fence that you created here, the file size shouldn't be that large.

Basically, the fence.tga, the pro. file, the pro.lod and the ls file.

Hey Dav. :)
Please, couldn't you take a look at those files from the first message's download link?
D_Fence.pro is packed inside FY2.dat.
I'd prefer not uploading single parts of the mod without authors's permission, if possible.
I'm keeping that as a last resort option anyway. ;)
Sorry.
Funny thing is the same view renders at 75fps on the highly inefficient Landscape Studio tool.
I see that Norb tried to bring some batching techniques for 3D models into the engine at the time.
But in special situations like the above-mentioned, I think the cure was almost worse than the disease!
Ciao!
