Question about Stances and Strategy

Can someone explain how stances work? Do they work this way - if I'm a brigade commander and my objective point (doesn't matter what it is, could be an objective marker, location, etc) is let's say 1000 yards away. My brigade is in line formation. Do I click on the brigade commander and double-click on the proposed objective then issue the stance i.e attack/probe/defend/etc. Does this mean my brigade will follow the stance ( attack/probe/defend/etc) strategy towards the objective?
basically - attack, probe, defend/etc all the way to the objective
or...
Do I click on the brigade commander and double-click on the proposed objective with a formation then once the brigade gets to the objective point i issue the stance. ?
get to objective then attack, probe, defend/etc
