This really needs to go in the mods section, but yes, no reason you can't model the 1600s. I've even seen a sprite sheet for a pikeman in the Gettysburg Blenheim mod. Getting an infantry unit with only a melee function and no ranged weapon to work in the game would be the challenge. The other biggie for this period is infantry units of mixed weapons, a main body of pikeman and two wings of musketeers. You could probably get this to function by making it a brigade and create a brigade line formation with the wings of musketeers against the centre unit of pikes.

That would be my first approach.

1600s cavalry and artillery are easy.

Well the melee would look of, melee now is kaos and quick.

Melee during 30yw would last hours. You need to mod it so only the first few ranks actally fight, and that the pike block keeps it formation.

Also need to give some cav the ability fire while moving, and code the ability for cav to fire, pull back fire ect.

Not that I'm aware of. The mod with the earliest historical setting I'm aware of is Blenheim (1704) with no pikes.

Personally I'd really like to see an English Civil War mod. That would be fantastic and the WL maps would be quite suitable because of the similar building styles.

First thing to do is wait for the documentation of the SDK of SOWWL, meanwhile study the features of the battles of the English Civil War. Then you can begin to mod the game: oobs, formations, weapons. If you see that the result of your modifications is good and is close to the features of the ECW, you can start with the making of the sprites.
I'm very interested in the XVII century, but at the moment I'm working on another project.

Cheers

I would dearly love to see 17c in general and English Civil War in particular (a subject I have specialised in since school). I don't really expect it to happen but let's pretend...

Mods would need to include:
Cavalry recklessly charging, getting "blown" and taking a long time to reform (Ironsides excepted)
Cavalry charging after soft targets like the baggage train and vanishing from the battlefield for hours.
Units getting lost (the command "go to this map location" can not be used in a time when there were precious few maps and armies rarely had them anyway).
Formation of "battalia" - brigades made up of regiments or of companies from various regiments that fought in one unified formation - this may not be compatible with the Norbsoft pattern of using one flag to identify one fighting unit.
Much greater importance of individual leaders.
Chance of units with poor morale or questionable commanders changing sides during the battle.
Downright disagreements between generals on the same side.
Artillery blowing up, getting stuck or taking ages to move across difficult ground, huge teams of horses needed for the bigger guns.
Most actions in the ECW were sieges. I don't think the bigger ones could be easily simulated but the many actions around country houses, castles and perhaps some fortified towns could be, but it would need modelling of storms and sally-outs, setting fire to roofs, mortar and grenade fire...

If anyone is seriously pushing this project and wants help I'd be very pleased to lend a hand. I've spent years writing my own wargame for ECW as a strategic simulation (not a battle simulation and purely for my own amusement), including recruitment, tax, supply and setting up command structures, and have a library of over 50 books on this era.
