Campaign battle starting position

Why, when you go to battle during the sandbox campaign, and you enter one, the two armies are starting right on top of each other? I can't even set up or make preliminary movements because I start and then 5 seconds later 30K men are rolling over my balls.

Is that some setting that I am doing wrong or is it made like that?

if you run into them on a road a line of sight battle is very likely.

But on campaign you cannot go anywhere else but a road.

If i remember correctly they alternate between LOS and hunt them down. Attack/defend happen if you are in a town unless it is a very big battle, then it is hunt them down.

My experience has been LOS battles only and way too close.

twice a single cav division on the flank with horse atty support has been annihilated by 2 cav divisons with 3 atty batteries in support. This happens faster than I can get them out of danger.

These LOS battles should be a modified hunt them down where your screening units stop at 1st sight and your remaining forces are farther behind. Maneuver before battle is vital, and necessary.

Also I have trouble keeping the detached units together. I thought I had 2 infantry corps and one cavalry corps were together, but they engaged the enemy separately and not unified.

They should, if they are part of the same branch in the OOB after you reattach them.
