In the aftermath of the disaster at Waterloo, Napoleon has but one intact division remaining with which to slow down the Iron Duke’s vigorous pursuit. The Emperor has ordered these hardened veterans to stop the Anglo-Allies cold -– to buy him time to organize the additional resistance necessary to save Paris. Bonaparte has chosen to position these troops in the vicinity of the Sanok River.

Additional detail with battle particulars, mod requirements, and links to mod downloads will be posted soon. Note: a required mod (KSNapoleonMod) will see an update this week.

For now, players are encouraged to sign-up on Doodle. This will get us off to a fast start with CinC designations and early side assignments.

Sides -- French (commanded by Bonaparte) or Anglo-Allies (led by the Duke of Wellington) -- and specific commands will be determined from preferences expressed in the Doodle sign up and as players show up. This will take a few minutes, so please be patient. Most standard KS and HITS/GCM game practices will be in place (e.g., Army CinC’s, 10 minute Council of War at launch; foliage always turned-on, no restrictions on TC’ing subordinate leaders, etc.)

Make plans to be there – and be sure to register your side and command preferences early on Doodle!

In this Scenario:
*Players will, for the most part, lead brigade-sized commands under a division/corps/army organizational umbrella
*The single objective, possession of which at game’s end will determine victory, is located in area E3 -- along the east edge of the map
*Both Armies have some limited flexibility in choosing initial deployments:
-Defending French may designate starting locations in any of east-edge areas E2 – E4 for individual divisions. In addition, French cavalry have the option of beginning the game in any of the areas D2 - D4.
-Attacking Anglo-Allied divisions have the option to begin in any of the center/west B-column areas (1 – 5). Additionally, Anglo-Allied cavalry may choose to begin in any of the areas C2 – C4.

Mods, Maps & Files Required for this Event:
*Go to Uncle Billy’s convenient post “Set Up for SOW NAPOLEON GAMES For Kriegspiel Style“ for a complete list of links to the mods & files you’ll need. http://forum.kriegsspiel.org.uk/t759-se ... piel-style

*If you haven’t played the Napoleonic mod in the past couple of months, download the latest version of the “Road to Wagram & Peninsular” mod, and be sure to follow the instructions there (including the need to delete/disable the Road to Wagram logistics folder.
*Everyone must download either the large or small version of the“KSNapoleon” mod as it was updated this week.

Special note to Peninsular Campaign Players: Be sure to deactivate both “NAP_KSPeninsularMod” (large or small versions) and “RestrictedMovementMaps” mods

At game time, everyone should have only these mods activated:
*RandomMaps6
*Road to Wagram & Peninsular
*KSNapoleonMod (large or small)
*GCM Terrain 4 (optional)

CinC’s and a few early side designations will be released soon

Additional Background
Through the magic of modding, Scourge of War is now the best way to recreate Napoleon-era battles in multi-player. There’s no need to run the GCM Launcher or join the Battle Queue for this one!

There are many unique aspects of play involved with the Napoleonic mod. You will experience, for instance, cavalry charges, infantry squares, and 120 yard rifle ranges. The style of play is also different. As Marching Thru Georgia notes, “unlike the ACW games, [in Napoleonics] there tends to be a preliminary period before the infantry engages. During that time, artillery bombardments take place, cavalry try to establish their superiority and some of the infantry can go on long marches to attack an enemy flank.” In other words, preliminary action and maneuver is typically prolonged – with less of the dash-in for a quick fight.

The KS Napoleon Mod was updated just today -- so everyone playing Saturday needs the latest (either large or small version depending on your screen resolution). The download links are in Uncle Billy's post on the KS forums:

Bonaparte’s rear guard managed to hold off the aggressive pursuit of the Duke of Wellington at the Sanok River in a hotly contested battle. The fight was marked by desperate cavalry charges and counter-charges, infantry formations changing quickly in and out of square, and savage close combat. In the end, the French high-ground advantage and interior lines were major factors in the Emperor’s success.

Battle Replay File:

Overall, 12,441 men came to battle for the Anglo-Allies while 10,946 wore the French blue. Wellington’s force suffered 5,062 casualties and the French 3,951. Follow the link below for a PDF detailed summary of the battle results and player order of battle.

Picton's Division sets off on it's long flanking march, via Berlin, or so it seemed at the time!
Image

Two battalions of King's German Legion light infantry are deployed as a skirmish screen to cover the column.
Image

We finally come around behind the French right but a Caribineer brigade deploys to slow our advance to a crawl. We push forwards eventually and the KGL light troops skirmish forwards aggressively. Armed with Baker rifles they did a good deal of damage to the French line but their hovering cavalry support obliged us to form squares quite often and in that formation our losses slowly mounted.
Image

The splendid British hussars. Sat on their hill. Looking splendid. And very clean. And rested.
Image

Uncle John ably commanded the second brigade of Picton's Division - the Brunswick Avante Garde, Leib Garde and 3 Light Battalions. Here they are advancing smartly in lines but having to halt now and again to make hasty squares as the French cavalry seemed to be everywhere, especially on our left where we had no friendly cavalry support.
Image

Towards the end of the fight with masses of dead horsemen in heaps between the infantry lines. We fought hard and well and held the objective for about 30 minutes but the rest of our army (the right wing) collapsed trying to attack the enemy held hill (seen in the right background) and so our holding of the objective was for naught as we had to retire whence we had come or else face the whole of the French force once our right wing had crumbled.
Image

It was one of those very tough see-saw battles where you know you're winning and will eventually prevail, only to find out that across the other side of the battlefield everything is caving in in disaster and they just haven't told you!
