A while back I promised to release some OOB packs of the great campaigns of the American Civil war – This fantastic game has evolved dramatically and the selection of additional maps now available make this possible, so from time to time I will be releasing a Campaign OOB pack. A lot of focus thus far has been on the Eastern Theatre of the war however the Western theatre was just as hard fought as was the Trans-Mississippi Theatre. Some of the battle featured will be smaller affairs (the improvements in ratio of troops in SOWG now make these smaller battles possible)

So where to start? The campaigns of the American Civil War are categorized in many various ways. The U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry has identified 25 main campaigns - An alternative campaign categorisation is that of the National Park Service, Their categorisation are far more detailed and inclusive than the Army heraldry version, particularly for actions outside of the Eastern Theatre and Western Theatre.

The U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry - Campaigns of the American Civil War
  • Sumter 1861
  • Bull Run 1861 ("First Manassas" for Confederate service)
  • Henry & Donelson 1862
  • Mississippi River 1862-1863
  • Peninsula 1862
  • Shiloh 1862
  • Valley 1862
  • New Mexico Campaign 1862
  • Manassas 1862 ("Second Manassas" for Confederate service)
  • Antietam 1862 ("Sharpsburg" for Confederate service)
  • Fredericksburg 1862
  • Murfreesborough 1862-1863
  • Chancellorsville 1863

So I plenty to choose from then! I’m open to suggestions as Lee once said “if practicable” – Seaborne campaigns and ones involving heavy fortification are at this stage not really possible due to the maps not being openly available for modding but in the future these may be possible (I’d personally love to see these in the future). For the moment we are best looking at the more ‘open-field‘ campaigns and battles. There will not be any sprites or maps with these releases although I may change the organisational structure and unit make up (i.e. A more westernised look for any possible Western campaigns ;) ) and please feel free to contribute either here on the forum post or message me. :)

The following strike my imagination: Valley 1862; Atlanta 1864; red River campaign; Fredericksburg 1862 (the maps practically already exist in the Chancellorsville addition); The Vicksburg Campaign; & a personal favorite, Jubal Early's invasion of the Valley in 1864, including Monocacy.

The Atlanta campaign is the most obvious. Those battles were fought with fairly equal numbers. But why set your sights so low. The 1813-14 campaign had some great battles. With the general lack of French cavalry for follow through, it was a precursor to the ACW.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

My interest right now is the Kentucky invasion by Bragg. Perryville was fought only by portions of each army. A lot of what if's are possible. Buell had possibly 137,000 of all arms at his command in the whole campaign. He was able to get about 57,000 to the battle field of Perryville. Bragg had about 68,000 of all arms but never seemed to get them all together. Kirby Smith's command failed to co-ordinate as planned with Bragg. So many chances were lost. Not to mention Buell was sacked and Thomas was appointed but refused to take command and Buell was re-instated. What if Thomas accepted? At least a fifth of Buell's command were raw recruits picked up on the march. Bragg didn't get the recruits he expected from Kentucky only about a 1000 to 5000 estimated. What if again, if more rallied around the Confederate flag? Anyway, that's my humble interest.

Yep Jackson's Valley Campaign, Sherman's march to Atlanta and Grant at Vicksburg do really jump out as must do's. It has to be said - Early's campaign of 1864 is also an interesting one - Taylors Red River is a much forgotten campaign as are the Franklin and Nashville campaigns..... B)

Perryville well - Buell should have crushed Bragg but he was a paper pusher not a battlefield general so that could be looked at.

As for 1813-14 well that not really for here but the Napoleonic section MTG - although I would love to see 100,000 Prussians/Russians at Lützen or Leipzig!! :woohoo: Unfortunately we don't have packed sprites for them yet so the frame hit rate would be horrific!! - Although I am researching 1806 Jena campaign at the moment ;)

Keep the suggestions coming

Zeke

PS Quick sneak peak....

Here are a few things I have been working on for the mod one thing I personally didn't like (in SOWG now and previously TC2M) was the Artillery having individual flags not very realistic so I have borrowed an idea from the nap mod - ACW Unit Flags

So here is the US Artillery with unit flag....

Image

And if you have smaller engagement maybe company size instead of a flag for each unit ......

Image

and not leaving out the Confederates :)

Image

just a couple of ideas - they are not perfect need to dull them down and make them slightly more transparent when not selected but you get the idea B)

Okay My first campaign will be one that quite a few here in messages and over the last few months in posts have mentioned they would like to see.....

"It's February 1862 - The Civil war which at first was thought by many to last no more than a few months has been raging for nearly a year although several battles have been fought no decisive engagement has been gained by either side. Lincoln exasperated by in-action of his new senior military commander Major General George B. McClellan orders him and the newly created "Grand Army of the Potomac" to move on Richmond and end the war.

In a move that would become known as the "The Peninsula Campaign of 1862" McClellan formulated his plans. The campaign would become probably the single most ambitious Union operation of the entire War. McClellan decided that in order to outflank the strong Confederate defences in northern Virginia, an army over 120,000 men strong would be transported by sea to the Peninsula between the James and York Rivers, to the east of Richmond. Having bypassed those defences, the Federal army, would be able to advance quickly against the Confederate capitol, without having to face an entrenched opponent.....To counter this threat a desperate Jefferson Davis orders Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson into the Shenandoah Valley to defend and tie up Union Forces present in the area. The Shenandoah Valley is strategic for two main reasons 1/ A Confederate army could move through the valley to threaten Washington and 2/ Known as the "Breadbasket of the Confederacy" its fertile lands provided supplies/sustenance for whichever army controlled it. By Feb/March 1862 Jacksons has a force of 4500 men however the Union forces in the area has nearly 36000 men. At first Jackson was forced to retreat by Union Major General Nathaniel Banks but then in March - Confederate Cavalry Commander Colonel Turner Ashby reported to Jackson that Banks was now withdrawing troops from the area and that only a small Union force remained near Kernstown......With more men on the way (eventually reaching 17000 men) it was time for Jackson to Strike....."Stonewall" and his "Foot Cavalry" was entering the Valley in what would become one of the most famous and celebrated campaigns of the war......

This has been researched and will be as historically correct as possible it will include adjusted cavalry and the flag changes...more to come soon ;)

Zeke, that's a great choice. It's a campaign that will take ingenuity to fight. Also, it's a fine representation of Jackson at his best. :woohoo: :) :) :)

Thanks Don ...Yep totally agree Jackson at his best ....He fought an ingenious campaign using forced marches to totally bamboozle three Union armies each much larger in manpower than his own. :)

I will be including a full overview of the campaign with bio's on the main leaders, maps of the battles and overview of all the engagements I am also including new splash intro screens while the OOBs loads

so plenty to keep everyone happy

Best thing is that these battles were divisional in size so you can put your sprite ratio to max for full effect without burning out your computer B) :woohoo:

As for Western Campaigns - Don't worry guys these will be coming! ;) ;)

Testing going quite well I going to be using RebBuglers Bugles and Flags mod with this and other campaign release as they look so darn fine :) B) This mod can be found on the below link:

http://www.norbsoftdev.net/forum/modifi ... -flags-xii

Its a great mod and I recommend that you use it whether you download my mod or not. Please download and install the above mod now - the reason for this is that it includes some items that my mod will over write (don't worry RB your full genius will not be over done with my pathetically minuscule changes!!!! ;) - This is so the Valley Splash pages show up when you load up a OOB

The Louisiana Tigers play a key role in the Valley Campaign (in particular at 1st Winchester) I have the 150th Edition SOW which comes with the Tiger sprites however I don't think its fair on the developers to add these within the mod as this is an incentive to buy the new release, so these will not be included and instead will be represented in the mod with the stock sprites. Of course If like me you have this edition you can always amend the mods OOBs and include them yourselves :)

should be finished testing soon and plan to release this weekend
