Low FPS

Post by Konrad_Mana »

Hello!

A while aggo I started playing the SoWG Demo and noticed that I have a very low frame rate (in game) even though I have a fairly good computer. I am able to run most high end games with good results.

SoWG seems like a game that is less hardware demanding compared to other high end games of the present.
I'm really dissapointed to see that this game can't run smooth.

I would really like to purchase this game but is there any hope for a fix?

My system specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Intel E5400 Dual Core 2.7Ghz
MSI G41MP28
4GB DDR3 Memory
Nvidia Gainward 640GT

(my aim is to play strategy games even though i am able to run games such as Red orchestra 2 at Ultra settings)

I have ran several tests like Memtest, Video memory test and Furmark. All results where positive.

Thank you in avdance!

Kind regards,
Konrad

Hi Konrad, welcome aboard.

I have a similar machine,

Windows 7 64bit
Intel E6600 Dual Core 2.4Ghz
4Gb Ram
Nvidia 560GTX 1Gb

And i'm sorry to say she isn't what she used to be....

It struggles at times with this game. The processing goes into the amount of objects being displayed, and the game AI.

What I do is lower the visibility distance in the options and the amount of vegetation showing. The vegetation is the killer.

Thank you for the reply!

I just love the old antietam game, seeing that it comes alive again in SoWG makes me thrilled.

But I stil have some questions related to the performance issue:

Is there something wrong with my setup in order to play this game?

The graphics in SoWG look like from a game that was made in 2002/'04 Would this game run better on a old machine instead? for example a DirectX9 videocard?

And regarding the 2002/'04 graphics look; my machine should easily handle these kind of graphics (2D units and basic 3D elements that are not sophisticated at all) Or am I overseeing something that makes this game so high end demanding?

Thanks again for answering!

Kind regards,
Konrad

The big performance hits come from the number of units, the visibility range, and the amount of vegetation showing.

Add this paragrpah to your .ini file

[Debug]
DbgLvl=1
;NoAI=1
;DrawTiles=0
;AlphaOmega=1
;BenchMark=0
;MPLog=1
;AutoGameDB=1

This will let you see what FPS you are currently getting by pressing the 'u' key.

Try a few of these tweaks for starters and report back

1) Turn off 'offmap terrain' and 'offmap trees'
2) Lower the percentage of trees showing to 75%
3) Lower the vegetation draw distance to about 600
4) Lower the object draw distance to about 700
5) Lower the unit draw distance to about 800

That's pretty harsh, man. :P Sounds like you don't have Chancellorsville though... :)

The game is demanding because of the thousands of soldier sprites, high detail of the maps, and the AI calculations. However, adjusting your graphic settings as con20or suggested will allow the game to run smooth on almost any machine.
