Question for NSD - rivers

Post by Saddletank »

I have enjoyed several good battles on the Salem Church map, some of them at the Fredericksburg side of the map.

Unfortunately the AI doesn't recognise that the Rappahannock is a bad place to march through so some of the battles get a bit silly. Given that the greyscale map that defines the terrain types should be able to be interpreted by the AI is there any way of telling it to avoid the rivers and to only cross them by bridges or fords?

Could this recognition and avoidance of rivers be added in a future patch maybe?

In 2nd Manassas (or was it in 1st Manassas), Bull Run was impassable except at fords. Perhaps this feature could be reincorporated somehow.

That would help a lot.

I've suggested placing a line of buildings in place of a creek bed, and replacing the building model with a water texture. Not sure if that's a workable solution but it seems like a sound theory.

That's part of the map design and it more than likely falls on my shoulders. The areas where no troops would ever march are supposed to be surrounded by an impassible border for the troops to follow. I'm guessing that it's not used on these maps.

So there is a texture/color/function that prevents troops from crossing it? If it is on the grayscale file, one of us familiar with image manipulation programs could probably go back over the maps and put that in as a mod.

I'm assuming you are talking about the ability in TC2M/TCBR where troops would never march into the Bull Run except at designated fords and bridges, which has been ported over to SOW but is not used.

As Hancock says, that sounds a very positive reply Norb and if you could let the community know what this greyscale code is I am sure some clever people could have this fixed in no time.

The modder would also need the map CSV file to assign the grayscale color and I don't think we have released those yet. It's my responsibility to get these maps fixed. I have already been working on them and I'm sure we'll get them in a Chancellorsville patch soon.
