Visibility

Is there a fix for visibility regarding flags in the works? Last MP Game we noticed visibility was set at 1000 yards, yet commanders could see opponents flags at about 1200-1300 yards. Is there a reason it is this way, not sure if this is a bug or not. Some people were saying they could see flags 2000 yards away with 1000 yard settings, but I've yet to see this myself.

The way visibility works:
If a unit is spotted by any unit on your side, it is "visible" to your entire team, meaning the unit's graphics will be rendered, and you can click on their flag to select them and see what unit it is. Sometimes you won't physically see them because of hills or trees in the way.
The setting in your game options for "max units draw distance" does not affect this, nor does it affect line of sight. All it does is set the maximum distance that the troops will be rendered at. The flag and officers in a unit will always be rendered.
The other line of sight setting is in the scenario file, and controls the game's line of sight calculation. I've explained this thoroughly in older LOS threads. But even with LOS set to 100 yards, you'll see the flags/officers of all units on the field that are spotted by any friendly unit.

If I remember correctly, the distance was increased because some of the ECF scenarios required the artillery to fire at targets greater than 1000 yd. away.

There's no option for that, unless there's a hidden ini file command.
Even if you turned off the flags, you'd still see all officers, generals and artillery for all spotted units.

Do you mean the small hovering silver and gold 'ticks' that mark your troops? Yes. There is an option in one of the option screens to turn off flags.
The battle flags and national flags? No.
I'm still sure that in Leffe7's "Trapped" scenario the flags and officers could not be seen/were not rendered unless a unit of the enemy side was within 500 yards.

Right -- whatever the visibility distance is set at, units won't be shown unless they are spotted. But when they are spotted, they are shown to ALL players even if you're farther away than the visibility distance.

Well that kinda sucks for HITS games since we are seeing through the eyes of our regiments and not solely through the general's eyes. I understand why NSD did this, if only it was moddable. I guess reducing visibility is the best solution for now.

I agree with Baldwin.
As a matter of interest is sighting taken from regiments also, or merely from officers?

Any unit, infantry, cavalry, artillery, generals and supply wagons can spot units and that will reveal them to all human players.
