I was reading an article recently and a couple of things just sort of popped out at me. There are a number of things we are familiar with in contemporary life which have their roots in the Civil War. This may seem obvious but I find it interesting so I'm throwing it out there.

The two which came to me were the LSU Tigers whose namesake comes from the Louisiana "Tigers"; troops which fought during the Civil War and Fort Hood in Texas named after Confederate General John Bell Hood.

I'm sure there are a number of others. Let's hear yours.

PS: Another interesting sub-topic are the men who fought in the Civil War who became famous or infamous later in life. A couple of examples: Lew Wallace, author of "Ben-Hur" and Henry Morton Stanley of "Doctor Livingstone, I presume" fame.

Well.....where I live.....Reno, NV. Named for Union Major Gen. Jesse L. Reno......killed at the battle of South Mountain, September 14,1862.

And, unfortunately, we have a "Burnside Drive".....named for ol' Ambrose of course. Damn Yankee's!

There's also a Civil War Cemetery located on the western boundary of the University of Nevada Reno. I believe all laid to rest there were Union Veteran's.

Nevada itself was the only Western Territory to become a State during the ACW on October 31, 1864. The state motto is "Battle Born".

I forgot John C. Fremont was in the Civil War. I lived in Fremont, CA for a number of years.

Well John Sedgewick was born in my town and I think we have a park named after him.

The most obvious is Notre Dame's 'The Fighting Irish,' then there's UNC 'Tarheels'. Kansas State Jay Hawks have a bird as their mascot, but the name comes from the name of anti-slavery fighters before the war.
