Hope this isn't a wrong thing to do but I thought I would recommend it. Its obvious that there are many who know the battle and care about what happened. So I thought this would be of interest, I came across this book some time back:
The Union Generals Speak - the Meade Hearings on the Battle of Gettysburg
Edited by Bill Hyde
The govt setup a hearing about the battle and many of the key people were called to testify before this committee. It is very interesting to see their own words and to also see the dislike they had for Meade and how Sickles made himself out to be a hero. It makes for some good reading

Thanks. Always looking for an excuse to buy another book.

Do you know if the hearings are part of the OR?

Yes, that looks very interesting. I finally ordered a copy of Lee's memoirs- I hope it stays in print- check out Amazon- there are some very good autobiographical/memoir books. The Wertz trial was major event after the war- and a great film was made on it. He might have been innocent and framed- there were paid testimonies that were exposed- I saw the best documentary on the History Channel on his unfair trial and hanging. Great true story that closed the chapter in the war.

Lee didn't write any memoirs. Do you mean a biography?

Excuse me- Lee and Grant wrote books- plus Lee's son Captain Lee collected his father's memoirs. Look on amazon- search author Robert E. Lee- he wrote his memoirs as did Grant. I just ordered my copy finally. no lie- check amazon

Sorry but I dont know for sure if they are. Like with modern govt, Ive found trying to read information from official hearings is hard to read/believe/find. LOL
I was moving some books around, the downside to being in the iliatry bookclub..to many boooks, and I found a few other titels that I hvae read many times. I always enjoy reading about Gettysburg even if I already read them many times...
Brigades of Gettysburg by Bradley Gottfried - This is basically what the title says. They break it down for every brigade, North and South, and detail what they did for all 3 days of the battle. Nice read I thought
Gettysburg - A testing of courage by Noah Andre Trudeau - This one I like because it is just a simple but good study on what happened. No opinions expressed by the author on what should have happened but what did happen. Written very well
Last Chance for Victory: Robert E Lee and the Gettysburg Campaign - I suggested this one as it goes into a little more depth on the reasons why Lee went North. As the title suggests, its more about what Lee and ANV were doing and gives a lot of data for those who likes realtive numbers on strength of the armies. The one thing I didnt like was how they attacked other authors opinions about different aspects of the battle. Still overall I think its a great read. I have a better idea on decisions that were or were not made by Lee and the reason behind them. Another good read in my opinion
Hope you enjoy them if you read them

I have the OR but I was hoping you had waded through them for me.
I have Gottfried's Gettysburg Atlas. If you like books, which it looks like you do, it's a beauty. Hard cover, Full color maps, magazine pages. Nice. I bought on the recommendation of a couple of the scenario designers. If you're playing the Historic scenarios and you want maps to show you what happened, it's great.

Ok thanks for the recomendation, I will take a look for it. The military bookclub is kind of a blessing and a curse. So many good books that I want but cant afford LOL
I was lucky that I was born into loving history. My Dad was into reenacting and Gettysburg long before I showed up. He was a great teacher and my love for Gettysburg and the Civil War took off. he has hundreds of books so I always find something to read.
He even got me into the Park Watch program at Gettysburg. Being able to help the rangers patrol the battlefield makes me feel like Im giving back. Sitting on Little Round Top at 1am and hearing the noises of the night and thinking what it was like back then, just a great feeling

I envy you East Coast boys; being able to visit the battlefields. Nothing here but balmy temperatures, beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, and lush forests.
