Line of sight.

Hey guys.... Playing around with multi-player and sandbox.
Artillery units can fire at units they cannot see. Fire is ignoring terrain.
firing unit in gulley is firing through woods and over hill.
Infantry is firing through each other.
I am patched up.... What gives...?

Hi Mark. As far as line of site, not something I have given much thought to.. There could be a bug there, or maybe it's not handled correctly in the code. This is something I'll put on my to-do list to investigate.
Regiments firing through each other is something that is much better than it used to be, but it's still not perfect... If we make it too restrictive, regiments will have to run all over the place to find a line of fire... We have to find a happy medium. Also check the elevation of the regiment appearing to fire through the one in front. Sometimes they are on higher elevation.. They only need 20 feet and they can fire over them.

I did see the problem Mark is talking about while designing the PCL feature...LOS by arty through a hill. I'll get a save and that reported. Yeah, something's amiss here.

I'd wager they are related. Line of site and line of fire should be the same. (relatively).
Regiments were firing through the woods and over a slope too.
Ironically I was setting an ambush with a hidden corps and my arillery unlimbered and let loose from the valley floor... up a sharp incline, over a woods covered hill, and down a separate valley.
I'm sure the code is there, just maybe bypassed or turned off. But that is a Norb thing....
This makes unbalanced games impossible to play... Most certainly a bad thing.
Thanks guys... Keep plugging....
Mark
P.S. Also check to see if cannister is being fired through friendly troops.... :S

Firing through troops is a well documented thing, as mentioned, although I think it is better than previously. Cannister won't be fired through friendlies except maybe off the end of a unit. If you have a friendly regiment in the way, the guns won't fire cannister (or possibly anything else) at all.
My only thought on the artillery would be to TC the guns to maybe keep them from unlimbering? I think you may have been hoping for a bit much to ambush with an entire corps though... :silly:

I actually witnessed KG-Soldiers troops in a MP game take 2 rounds of canister while engaged in melee . His troops soon broke and the other reg. went unharmed from the indiscriminate canister.

Southern,
Well, you are correct. With no line of sight restrictions, even a brigade cannot ambush.
As far as TCing Artillery... That makes no sense as the enemy can see you and open up on you.
This is a serious issue because it DRASTICALLY effects scenario play, and probably has from day 1. (or as long as it has existed.)
If hidden artillery is in play, in the scenarios, the outcome accuracy is susspect, due to the extra forces on the field. When corrected, the scenarios will play differently.
It makes harder play options, in any form, worthless, as you must rely on tactics to defeat a LARGER ALL KNOWING AND ALL SEEING enemy.
It would take Grognard level from a simple slaughter of your forces to a massacre. (Either one is worthless to play and a waste of time.)

It is that serious. :woohoo:

Yep, I took that one on, reporting and testing wise. The bug should be squashed with the next patch. It will be quite obvious if it isn't, this was pretty glaring.

exceptional.....
It will make many things much better.
Hope the scenarios play correctly...
I will be look closely at that.
I believe it may have unkowingly surfaced during the testing of "The Pickett" Group of scenarios.
Our artillery issue.
