Hi Garnier,
Where did you get the surnames for the generals from? Are they real generals?
Source of generals' surnames in GCM
Re: Source of generals' surnames in GCM
I got a bunch of regimental rosters from the civil war collected all the names from them. There were tens of thousands on each side, but a lot were duplicates of course.
They're almost all from Virginia, Alabama, Pennsylvania and Indiana regiments.

The only thing I noticed for sure is that you got abbreviations in for some first names, like "Thos" for Thomas. I can't remember any of the others offhand, but there were only a couple. Wm for William is the only other one I can think of but I don't think you had it in the list.
Still, not a big deal and a heck of a list to choose from for those that actually care enough to name their commander. The rest of you can just randomize and forget it - literally. :silly:

Yeah there are a lot of abbreviations and misspellings in there. I did remove all the first names that were only listed once, because almost all of them were misspellings. But a lot of them could be removed for sure.

Thanks Garnier.
I asked as my surname is Humm, which is not common (at least in the UK) and you had Humm as an available surname! I was very pleased.
If the originals came from regimental rosters they could be any rank?

Not a problem, merely an observation. I think the cleanup you did already works quite nicely. Besides, as I said, most of these slackers don't even know their own names :pinch:Yeah there are a lot of abbreviations and misspellings in there.
