Gettysburg’s Invisible Force Field

In GB06 Three Times is Not a Charm, the Union seems to have a protective barrier (Force Field) across the north end of Gettysburg which affects the deployment pathing of AP Hill’s division. AP Hill’s division is deployed in standard battle-line formation centred by the Major General positioned on the trident fork roads just north of Gettysburg.

When I order AP Hill forward by clicking his destination flag to any location inside (Union/south side) the Force Field, interestingly Hill’s Road Flag Icon turns on - bright. When I subsequently click the battle-line formation (no additional command clicks), every unit in the division marches directly to Hill’s starting point. Upon each unit reaching Hill’s starting point, they all turn and march to their final battle-line destination as if in a typical road-march destination change. Of course my objective would be to have AP Hill's division march directly forward to engage the enemy - not break formation and head for AP Hill's starting position.

If I do the same procedure but click Hill’s destination flag to any location outside (Confederate/north side) of the Force Field, Hill’s Road Flag Icon remains off - dark. When I subsequently click the battle-line formation, every unit in the division marches directly to its’ destination flag while remaining in battle-line formation.

For the following screen-shots, I guestimated the approximate location of the barrier by clicking Hill’s destination position in a variety of locations. When I clicked Hill to a location inside the Force Field, his Road Flag Icon turned on (bright). When I clicked Hill to a location outside the Force Field, his Road Flag Icon remained off. For testing purposes, I sometimes started Hill on the road and sometimes I first relocated Hill well off the road, but I always kept his division in its original starting location.

SCREEN-SHOTS

The following screen-shot of AP Hill’s left flank starting position illustrates the clicked location of his destination flag on the Confederate/north side of the Force Field. Note his Road Flag Icon remains off.

The following screen-shot is the same but of AP Hill’s right flank.

As I tested away, the Force Field seemed to wrap in on its flanks like oxen horns. It may have something to do with the various starting positions in which I placed AP Hill; or, Cleaburn’s bottle of Jack Daniels he stole from JC.

ok ADukes – time for you to fly in with one of your succinct logical responses which immediately terminates this puzzle and makes me realise how much time I just wasted.

The #$%^& picutres are too small - sorry people. Please click on them to enlarge if you can't figure them out. I will have to figure out how to enlarge them later, as I am leaving the house right now.

I've only seen the 'go to the comander' problem when using road march and then while everyone is enroute, change the destination to a new one. I've never seen it happen from a standing start. I'll take a look at the force field this evening. The obvious reason for this behavior is that the union boys posted signs saying, "Stay on designated roads and keep off the grass." Anything that buys time for the good guys is OK with me.

Okay, here we go.

The road march button will highlight as soon as there is an enemy unit on Hill's path, no matter if he is roadmarching or not.

The truth is that the AI realizes how hard it was to program them for in town fighting or marching. So the generals got together and did a code review. It failed. So with the impending battles on the horizon, it was deemed easier to just avoid the town where the AI works much better :)

Norb suffers from way too much honesty and moral character to be admitted to Congress.
