For your next Patch

Post by Michael Slaunwhite »

Hi.

There is something that has been bothering me for a bit now, and that is when I give a movement order (double click) to another location why can't the direction be the direction I am facing instead of me having to be clicking away telling my individual troops which way to face. I don't mean the facing of my character I'm playing, but the direction of where I am looking.

For instance. I had troops already in place, but decided that they move to a location about 200 yards behind their current location. Once I doubled clicked their new location, the arrow was pointing in the opposite direction of what I wanted, so I had to click several times to get them facing in the correct direction. Be much easier if the facing arrow would automatically point in the direction I'm facing.

I know too some this could be just me nitpicking, but I've find it so annoying sometimes.

Anyway, just something that just got be really mad when I was preparing my troops for what I know is going to be one hell of a fight.

Off Topic:
After all this time playing this game, I still get that same strong feeling of fear/nerves running through me before the battle actually starts. I'm settled in, troops all set ready to go, and the Confederate lines are approaching (what a beautiful sight), and I get that fear for a few seconds before the battle begins. I don't know if anyone else gets the nerves or not, but this is one great game.

Later guys!

For the next patch, i have two suggestion :
1 - french translation
2 - possibility to reconfigure the keyboard

I don't agree, I think keeping the character facing makes more sense, but I don't think it's the real problem anyway. I think the real problem is that there needs to be a better interface to wheel. Click click click just is not a good way.
1 - french translation
2 - possibility to reconfigure the keyboard
1 - translation services are expensive, we just don't have the cash, but if a group of players wanted to get it together, we would help support the effort and make it work in game
2 - you can do this :) Always nice to answer yes to stuff. Check out Work/keyboard.csv, I know that I should have put in a good user interface for this and not make you edit a file, sorry about that. The problem is that the producer on this project has a lazy programmer that is always taking short cuts and I can't get him to do anything!

mikesla - Even though it's something I've never really thought much about, I can concur with your request. That can especially be a pain when placing troops in scenario design. The only problem I see with the arrow showing up in the direction your commander is facing is; what if you want to move back 200 yards, but not be facing in the same direction (like you are moving to attack troops behind you). It's almost like you would need two types of movement orders (arrows on the ground). Good observation though, and I'd like to hear some thoughts from other members.

You know, I've been testing the game for almost two years now, and I still have that feeling of "wow" every time I load up a battle... :)

Good idea for #1.

As for #2, this can already be done. There is a file called keyboard.csv in the Work folder. Open it up and you will see how the keyboard can be completely customized.

Edit: Ah, Norb beat me to the punch!

Another useful trick to use while getting troops to face the right way is to use the "," and "." keys to wheel left/right. I believe it's the equivalent of a few mouse clicks, and it's much better than having to click click click click... Talk to the other guys on the test team, I'm a keyboard only man. You should see my keyboard.csv file, I avoid using the mouse as much as possible. I hate clicking, plus it's a lot quicker when commands are right at your finger tips, instead of having to take the time to move the mouse to a button.

But Norb does bring up a good point about making the wheel interface better. Maybe a click and hold function, where you click on the ground, hold down the left mouse button, and move the mouse left/right to move the arrow. I've seen this in other games and it's very useful. Only requires one click. :)

I use courier orders so I have to be very careful which way I am facing when I give those sort of orders. I think another solution would be to have a button that would turn my character in the direction I am facing. That might not be too hard for that lazy programmer to implement.
I can make this march and I will make Georgia howl.

How about clicking on the compass changing the facing direction of the selected unit?

So let's say your unit is currently facing North. You click the East side of the compass, and he instantly faces that way?

Something like that. It would be relative to the way that you are looking, so that it was easy to understand. So if you click the E on the compass, they would face East. Since the compass is already turned relative to your view, if E was on the right, they would face to the right.
