Right Flank Question?

OK, I may be doing this wrong, but here goes the problem that I’m having with the courier message system!
Let’s say that General Scales is on the extreme right of the battle-line, and that the 34th North Carolina regiment is the last regiment, or to put it another way, holds the extreme right. So there are no more troops to the right of the 34th NC regiment.
Now, I send a message to General Archer – to move to the right flank of General Scales, deploy into battle-line , and to face north – he will form behind General Scales!!!!!
So, I issue another order – telling General Archer – to form on the right flank of the 34th NC regiment – now General Archer will place his position on the right of the 34th NC – but this places several of his regiments in the rear of General Scales.
If this is understandable – my question is – shouldn’t General Archer [/b] – place his left-most regiment on the right of whom-ever – and then extend his line to the right ?
Also – if a General has been given an order by me the player – shouldn’t this action – override his Take-Command status?
Basically, I have to ( 1 ) Take Command – of a Brigade – to stop the AI from moving them, ( 2 ) un-Take Command – to issue them a courier message, ( 3 ) re- Take Command – to keep them in place – so why not have an courier message from the player treated as if the player is moving the unit?
Or, I could be doing something wrong, this happens when you don’t read the manual!
Any input would be welcomed!
Thanks,
davinci

Hi Davinci:
You didn't say where you are in the chain of command. I don't usually command brigades, but if you are General Scales, I have seen both what you describe Gen. Archer doing, deploy in the general vicinity of the right flank or ignore your orders completely. The key to getting someone of equal or superior rank to follow a request, is to start the message with "Execute this orders immediately." It's the first line under information. This gives you the best chance of having your order/request carried out. In fact, I preface all my orders with this phrase.
If you are the superior of both Scales and Archer I usually see Gen Archer ride over to the right flank, spend a few moments sizing up the situation, then deploy his troops. I have never seen him immediately deploy a battle line on the right flank as you would expect. I have seen both what you describe, and also deploy wide of the right flank, as if he is trying to flank the enemy. These different approaches may have to do with the general's style, daring, balanced, etc.
As I said, I don't usually command as a brigade commander, so I don't have much experience with moving individual regiments via courier. Someone else, Garnier?, said that they do not seeem to respond well, if at all. But you might try the "Execute this order immediately" trick and see if that gives better results.

Marching Thru Georgia ;
Thanks, for the response, I was playing a custom OOB but with General Lee at the top of the command, he was the one that I used to issue the orders.
I’ll also go back and experiment with the execute this order immediately , and see if this helps out!
But, I think that Norb – may have to look at exactly where the Brigade needs to deploy when given the command to deploy on the right flank of an existing unit!
The main reason that this may become an issue, would be that if my units are not deploying correctly with the right amount of spacing , then the AI units, or the enemy might be having this same problem.
This would cause the units to do a lot of over-lapping !

Davinci:
Hmm, being Gen. Lee puts two levels above direct command. I don't think I have ever done that! I wonder if that has something to do with it? I'll give it a try this evening.

Marching Thru Georgia ;
Disregard this for the moment; I’m still in the process of testing this out!
Right-Flank !
It appears that if the supporting unit is in the
Column Formation – when given the order to move to the
Right-Flank of a
Brigade they will over-lap the brigade that they are supporting by
two regiments .
But, if the supporting unit is already in
battle-line formation – when given the
order they will
deploy on the right-flank of the
Brigade – and only slightly over-lap the
last regiment.
So, it appears that the
spacing needed to keep the units from
over-lapping – is based on the spacing of the
original formation , and not on the formation that they will end up with!

Davinci, i'm a IT analyst, so I work with testers everyday. If you are not a software tester, you missed your calling. You have an incredible knack for getting straight to the root of an issue. Nice work!

Hey,
Mayonaise how is everything going, it’s nice to see that a lot of us from the other forum kept the same user names!
In all honesty,
thanks for the compliment but I could never do your job, extremely well, due to the fact that I can only test something that holds my interest!
I found this out when helping to test the
TC2M game, if I don’t play a particular part of the game, testing it drives me up the wall, and slams me down to the floor!
Now, the
Sand-Box…thing , (i.e…Open Play), I plan on testing and experimenting with this part of the game, a lot!
BTW – my compliments to
Norb, and Team – this
courier system is an incredible piece of work, and can only get better as the time goes by!
