Substitute Commanders - How they work

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

Substitute Commanders - How they work

Post by Garnier »

I assume this is not intentional. For example in the sample OOB:
SPOILER: SHOW
John Newton will always be the commander that appears in sandbox mode, because he's the last commander with that organization () in the file. I would think it is supposed to be the other way around with Reynolds being the commander in sandbox.

In the OOB editor I could work around this by putting the primary commander at the end of the list, but then if this is a bug and it gets fixed, all the OOBs made that way would be messed up.

But the sample OOB you're talking about is a Master OOB. ;)

So it is, and master oobs are what you use in sandbox mode.

But there is a slight difference between scenario master OOBs and SB master OOBs, that's why there are two sample OOBs in the mod sample.

You can't place replacement commanders in SB OOBs.

I see.

However the only difference I see between the two (sandbox and scenario) master oobs is that in sandbox OOBs you want the replacement commanders first in the file (so they are ignored) and in scenario master OOBs you need them to come last, so they are used as replacements.

This is annoying if for example you want to edit one OOB and use it as both a sandbox and scenario master OOB. This is going to be what everyone wants to do when they start making OOBs. It could just as easily have been done the same way for both types of master OOBs.

There are no replacement commanders in the SB OOB and the order of them in the scenario master OOB doesn't matter.
You can use every SB OOB as master OOB for scenarios, but you can't use a scenario master OOB with replacement commanders (same CoC numbers) as SB OOB.

BTW, the listed replacement commanders are no real replacements, they are just there to have a reference if you need one of them in a scenario.

Well you can, it just uses the last commander in the OOB in the given organization.

OK, this works fine then. I can just have the editor export them backwards (primary commander last) and it will use the primary commander in sandbox mode, and use whichever commander is picked when you export a scenario.

Thanks.

Raibeaux,

The following is from the manual on Pages 16, 17 & 18 where it explains and breakdown Sandbox :

"The Sandbox allows you to hone your command skills by playing any commander of your choice on any Map of your choice........."
