There are no severs involved. Each game is direct connect. All you need is one player to be the host, and that persons machine acts as the server. You can either enter the game lobby, the host creates a room, then everyone enters the MP Select screen where the game can be setup. Or everyone can just directly connect to the host if they have their IP address.

Will ther be somewhere like a lobby where we can log in to find people who want to play the game?

Yes. You create a battle hq account, sign into the lobby, and whoever creates the room will host the MP game.

The lobby is available on the same screen as the direct connect. Connecting to MP is very easy. :)

It's not too bad, but it can only run as fast as the slowest machine.

I would imagine that:
dial up is a disaster
Dsl is meh
and cable is sweet

Dial Up won't work with this game.

I host games on a cable connection and it runs great. But it will still slow down quite a bit when players with slow computers join the game (it helps for everyone to scale their performance settings back when playing MP). Supposedly, the fastest internet is Verizon FIOS, but too bad it's not available where I live. :(

Just checked to see if it was available in my area....YEP, it is! Is it affordable in my area (the basement)...NOPE, even with their special $20.00 discount price of $89.95 per month! Guess I will just have to stay with Roadrunner, for now.

The original Shogun: Total War game used this same system: The host's PC was the server. Even those with slower connections could play, and it is true, the game (at least the Shogun game) always played at the speed of the slowest PC in the game.

I myself, didn't mind the game slowing down some, since it actually gave you more time to think and move. I like to micromanage and a bit of lag actually helps my playing style.

Besides, I have a cable connection and a fast PC now, I will only lag in ability!
