I remember this quote of Pres. Lincoln in the Ken Burns "Civil War" documentary.....

" Both sides claim God is on their side. But one side must be wrong...God can't be for, and against, the same thing at the same time."

Does anyone here know in what speech he said that? Or maybe know of a specific book in which that quote is mentioned?

The bottom of the flag says "Clear the Way," yes. The top says, "Ireland Forever." It's ironic that Clear the Way was used by a Confederate Irish regiment but was also the battle cry of the Union Irish Brigade.

The bottom of the flag says "Clear the Way," yes. The top says, "Ireland Forever." It's ironic that Clear the Way was used by a Confederate Irish regiment but was also the battle cry of the Union Irish Brigade.

Yes, it does mean "Ireland Forever"...probably an the most Irish sayings understood by all. Thanks for reminding me.

Incidentally, Faugh a Ballagh (also written Faugh-a-ballagh or Faugh an Beallach) was first used as a regimental motto by the Royal Irish Fusiliers in 1798 which also was the year of the United Irishmen Rebellion (Rising of '98) which was commemorated in a tune titled "Rising of the Moon" made famous in the US by Tommy Makem & the Clancy Brothers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwHm18K3kjs). My personal favorite from that "rising" is "Young Roddy McCorley." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwHm18K3kjs)

I thought about just writing "Hey Kerflumoxed", in the Subject title!





Speaking of....Hey Kerflumoxed, would you know of a specific book in which the Lincoln quote is mentioned? I've looked in the books I have, and even tried cross-referencing the quote on the internet, but so far, no luck.

The reason I ask, is because I'm writing a book review for history class and that quote would be a lovely touch in my closing paragraph, but my professor will want me to cite the source. And I'm not allowed to use the Ken Burns documentary as a source.


And I don't think listing the Forum as a source, will work for her either. :woohoo:
