Couriers

This has probably been asked and addressed...but, I can't find it, if it has.
Under the present system of TC2M, couriers always use the roads and try to "run" through the opposing infantry resulting is a decimation of the courier corps!

Has this tendency been addressed, allowing the couriers to use a more direct route, bypassing the enemy? I think I had 382 couriers KIA in a 3 hour game I just concluded.
Also, is there a "button" that will shut off the courier function?
Thanks
J

I had that problem too a couple of days ago (Played Pope). The live screen kept getting clogged with dead courier messages and took me awhile to figure out where the problem was, cause the message dos'nt tell you where.

Usually, I don’t get involved in too many debates, I just don’t see the point, but if you are losing that many couriers, you may not be playing the game wrong, but you are not playing the game exactly right!
I might lose several couriers per game, but this is sometimes due to the route that the courier takes, on the first several tries. Some of them are quite stupid routes, so I will agree with that!
The key to this is to control the roads that the courier will take, and to place your Divisional Commander along a clear road that leads to your Corps Commander , and your Corps Commander along a clear road that leads to your Army Commander .
The game is not really designed for you or the AI to control the road system, but if you implement this into your game, the result is almost the same, as if it was!
In the real world you would always try to keep the road system under your control, this helps to bring up reinforcements, supplies, and allows for a quick exit route if it turns badly for you.

I can speak for myself, that I had let my left flank run under the AI, while tending to my right quite some distance away. Broke away from the right to straiten out the mess on my left, no more dead courier messages.

I play with a custom OOB that contains three Corps within both armies.
I start out by moving two corps along different roads, and by placing the Corps Commander ahead of the divisional leader, this sort of acts as a scout, considering that I don’t play with any cavalry.
Usually the Corps Commander will spot the enemy first, at this time I will click on the divisional commander, detach all of the regiments, to avoid them stopping, and then start placing them in the best possible position, depending on the terrain.
I then move the Corps Commander back, usually at a house, farm, etc, along a road that has a clear route, to keep the lines of communication open.
Now, I will move the Army Commander up from the third Corps that hasn’t moved, and place him in a very secure position.
Now, this is based on myself micro-managing the army, this way I can control the whereabouts of my army, this keeps everything in order.
So, if you play with a different set of rules, by allowing the AI to control part of your army, then I’m sure that you would have a very different perspective of the game.
This means that a lot of couriers might be killed depending on the decisions of the AI , so I probably spoke out of turn, so disregard this!

Where I run into trouble is using my cavalry in the rear of the enemy to disrupt their movement. Whenever I move the main command, a courier is sent out to the cavalry and he invariably ends up "riding" through the enemy to reach the CO...and it is inevitably down a road that already possessed by the opposition.
I would like to have the ability to "route" the courier or "turn off" the courier...or, if he sights the enemy, automatically choose a different route!

OK, in a situation such as that, I would just change the
courier dead to that of a
enemy soldier dead sprite, now this will not solve the problem of the courier running through the enemy lines, but it will not produce a ton of dead horses on the battlefield either.
You may wish to post this in the
Wish-List Section , considering that I doubt that this has been addressed, considering that this is a major
coding change !

I remember awhile back (year or so), there was talk about a smarter courier, I don't know if it is going to be implimented in the new game. Your concerns were voiced then, it's another thing to see if something is going to be done about it.

I don't mind the dead horses and bodies. I just get awfully tired of the courier screen popping up repeatedly.
Actually, the dead horses remind me of when I worked on North/South. Following the Petersburg scene, there was a scene showing some Unionists walking around a demolished town with horse carcasses strewn around. On most films (such as Son of Morning Star) these carcasses are just made in the shape of a horse from "fur" fabric. (They actually make good mattresses; they are very soft.) On N/S they used horse hides from a kill line...skinning and tanning the hides. It was impossible to get a live horse within 50 yards of the tanned horse! Perhaps they sensed that was their future!

Untill you cure the problem, it's punishing, cause You can't move till you close out the message window(s), which can arrive every second or so. If necessary I'll go into pause, find the the culprit, double quick them to somewherelse. :S
