Martin's extensive tests produced the results I've seen using the stock courier file. Aside from ordering a corps around, which of his test results are you not able to reproduce? I'll look at those and report back.

Hi MTG - come on, you cant move your divisions or brigades?

The third and fifth on the list :)

I assume you mean this:
ordered division commander to move to location - order format as you suggested 'move to this location, division, use roads'. Courier moves to division commander who immediately moves, but troops do not.
This is accurate. With stock courier file give this order 1. move to location (any), 2. use roads for your unit. The result is that only the commander moves as Martin observed. Now do the same thing with my mod. The entire unit moves as expected. The problem is the order is movespec rather than Amovespec. In order to get the entire unit to move with the stock file, you need to include an 'A' order in the chain somewhere. Usually this would be the change formation order. Then everything works. However, when a unit is to move into battle, I almost never give a formation order. What's the point? The AI commander chooses how to form up the battle plan himself. But if you do that the commander will attack alone.

HI MTG -

If you read that again Martin did try: 1- move to this location, 2- division form line, 3- use roads as I aked him to. So he included an 'A' order. It still didnt work for him, for brigades or division. Theres something wrong, and its not a standard issue.

I dont doubt your mod is an improvement, I love it, but if even the standard orders arent working for him he needs to reinstall.

Guys. I may be inadvertently causing confusion, because I misinterpreted Con20or’s instructions. You two boys have been very helpful to me, and the last thing I want if for you to fall out :)

I understood 'move to this location, division, use roads' as 'move to this location', 'specify division (ie order recipient), 'use roads'. Must admit it seemed a bit counter-intuitive, but no more so than MTG’s message time workaround which worked.

I now realise that what you meant by ‘division’ was: 'change to division formation'.

Have now run another test in custom as army commander, brigade level couriers on that basis:

Ordered division commander to move to location - order format move to this location, division form line, use roads: Courier moves to division commander who immediately spawns couriers to brigade commanders, who immediately spawn couriers to each individual regiment, which then move immediately those couriers arrive.

Hope that helps

Martin

Hi Martin,

Dont worry about it, talking about couriers is a nightmare. As a topic it doesnt lend itself well to easy explanations.

The stock game always requires a formation to be included. This could be the cause of some of your other problems too, since 1.2 or maybe it was 1.3, you always have to specify a formation. You will need to do that for brigades too, and thats also why corps movements generally dont work because there are no corps formations.

If you dont want to specify a formation, or do want to give corps formation orders, use MTG's mod which is a must have.

Hi Martin-

Im just looking back through this thread trying to figure out whats going on and its a bit of a mess.

GBS started it
We then started talking about the processor bug (alleged :) )
We then started talking about no time delay
Now we are talking about officers moving but your troops are troops not.

So,

What are we actually talking about?

If you get time, and if what you know now, or a reinstall, or using MTG's mod dont solve your problems, will you make a seperate thread and list the issues your still having problems with?

Well, just to add to the confusion, Martin and I played an MP game (transatlantic, yet!) and since this was my second MP game ever, I was learning to use the courier system. Each time that I wanted to move my division - as the Division CO - I made sure that I was 'with' myself, then clicked "movement" - again, to be sure I was on the right place - then double left-click on destination, followed by a formation (column), followed by "move by road". The couriers moved out right away, I (the Division CO) moved out immediately, and once the couriers got to the Brigades they sent out couriers to the Regiments, and the regiments changed to column (if they weren't already in column) and the whole Division moved out smartly forming a nice road march. The Division was strung out on the road, one regiment behind the next within its own Brigade, me at the head and the artillery at the tail end. Each time I reached the way-point, I repeated that method to the next waypoint and it worked across about half the map. Now, I had the options set on 'custom' and had checked the "Brigade" box for couriers. Oh, and I have only 1.4 and Pipe Creek without mods or Antietam. I dunno if that helps or not. And he was doing the same with similar results.

Okay, just checkin' and wantin' to boast a bit about the Britain to Texas connection workin'. Mainly 'cause there's a bunch of new players comin' to SOW from Britain and it's nice to be able to expand the folks - and number of folks! - you can play this fine game with. :woohoo:
