If this is about a larger or a zoomed portion of the mini map, then I'm out. I see no advantage or enhancements with this.
What I would like to see in this area is a new Zoom Map, exactly in the appearance of the mini map. When one clicks on a location, the map would close like the command map, and the camera would be at max height looking straight down at the position selected. I could, and would, use this.
I've been working with this concept, to now avail. Changing map behavior is the immediate problem, then there's the scripting of the camera height and angle.
Is it possible to mod this concept ADukes?
That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about having a closer view of the action on the mini-map. This is only necessary because when you're looking at the overall map (especially on the big maps) all the unit icons get clumped together. If you can zoom in once or twice to where the action is, the icons will be spread out. You could focus on just a division, or a brigade..

From the sidelines, me too...

I think you meant 'micro-management to da max.'

For larger battles, I would think you'd want to avail yourself to the courier system. Otherwise, you're so busy jumping about and clicking, you never get to enjoy the development and flow of the battle. By the way, how many mice do you burn through in a year?

What about cutting up the map in four piece's and then only showing that section of the map. This should still allow for the units \ icons to appear on the map, at this scetion; and since the map is only a fourth of it's original size it could be displayed at a larger scale.
This, I think is the only way to have a zoomed in view, and I think that this is very do-able.
The map could be labeled as
NW, NE, SE, SW - this would not replace the other two maps - but give an additional four maps to the player.

But what if your units were spread across more than one quadrant?

That will not matter, those units and that section of the map can still be drawn, but
you can mod the section of the screen that displays by adjusting the coordinates.
At least, this is how it is working in my head, I don't see why this will not work, but there is always a chance that I'm wrong.

Thought I'd throw in macro to mean large scale...guess it didn't fly. :S
I occasionally test with the couriers to learn their behavior to help with forum questions. I find that their response is sporadic, sometimes taking 10 minutes or more to respond to orders. You know best, is this a bug? And I'm talking time after the message is received via courier, with the officers just a couple hundred yards apart.
Regarding mice, yeah, I blow through them. Microsoft cheapies last about 3 months. Presently have a logitech mouse that is holding up nicely...but it cost 40 bucks, that's high end for me.
Oops, wobbling off thread...zoomed mini map so the icons are spread out...ya gotta be kidding.

But not while I'm playing. If the Wheat Field is in one quadrant and Little Round Top is in another, I have to switch back and forth to see all my units if I'm understanding you correctly.

Not a bug, a great feature.

The dithering is mostly done by timid commanders. It's very human like. Try this in a sandbox game. Command Birney's Division of Sickle's III Corps. When the enemy appears, (sorry, but the Rebs are the enemy), order Ward to probe ahead. Off he goes immediately, without any fear. Now give Trobriand the same order. He will ride towards the rebel scum and reconnoiter for a few minutes. Then he'll ride back slowly to his men, thinking about what to do. After another delay, he will put one, maybe two regiments in motion. Once those are engaged he will eventually order up the rest of the brigade. Finally, try the same thing with Graham. His behavior will be somewhere between those two extremes. It's all based on their personalities and to a lesser extent, on whether they are having a good day or not.
I stumbled upon this behavior when first playing via couriers, just like you. Once I saw this, I realized a great feature of the game was being overridden by pointing and clicking. Norb really did an oustanding job in writing the personality AI.

That's a great idea. They would be buttons either on the toolbar, or on the mini-map screen when you pull up the full size map. NW, NE, SE, SW buttons.
