Yes, I downloaded the exe and ran it, but it did nothing more than extract files

What did you download? Both links in this thread run the DirectX installers.

Go to the folder where you extracted the files and run dxsetup.exe.

I just went back through the thread. Have you installed the latest patch? Did you disable your anti-virus and try it?

Ran the Dxsetup yes, and restarted. Once logged in, I ran the game and it crashed immediately as usual. Did I take a wrong step there?

Try running \system\system32\dxdiag.exe. This will check if everything is installed properly and whether there are any hardware incompatibilities. Perform all the steps the program asks you to do.
