I've also used irfanview for a while. I don't recall having to subscribe to anything (then again, these days I often don't recall as much as I'd like to), and I don't get spam from the download that I am aware of. It also allows you to quickly look at the sprite files, which is handy when troubleshooting.

I DO seem to recall that the DDS viewer is an addon to the basic irfanview download.
