I came across something peculiar while playing Version 1.6 beta.

Game won't run. Keeps crashing. Hopefully we won't get any posts here, but if we do, we'll try to help you out. You can also post any bugs that you find here. IMPORTANT: Don't post mod related problems here!

NP - like I said, if it shows up again - grab a save.
No problem. I'll start a game now, and see if that happens. I'll use the exact same oob, and map, and I'll get back to you on it.

I'll be back in about 30 or so minutes.

Well, I did finally get a similar setup as the video. Now as far as finding a glitch concerning the arty AI pathing I don't think there is one but in this savegame (for you to play), I found the arty ai so freaking maddening that I started to shout at them to figure out what the hell they wanted to do.

Anyway, maybe there is a glitch, maybe not, but I think the commander(s) in charge of the arty should be shot, if not then beaten to an inch of their lives.

I did find that the A.I couldn't figure out what it wanted to do. It jumped from doing something, then it would change it mind, and do something else, then it would change it's mind again, and so on, and so on. The arty just couldn't make up it's mind which I found very, very annoying.

Here is the savegame just in case there is something here.

I don't think this problem is new.

I have noticed it in the past when a large artillery formation, usually a Divisional artillery reserve, happens to be the first unit to run into the enemy.

Headless chickens barely describes it. They stop, start to unlimber, change their mind, limber up, move away a few yards and keep going through the cycle ad nauseum. The number of rounds actually discharged are minimal, despite a whole army sitting in front of them with targets galore.

The decision should be simple ....they should either fight or run .... but they do neither.

You described it PERFECTLY!

Update: I did make a video of this battle, but I got rid of it because of my hollering at the computer monitor, and it's something I couldn't post on my youtube channel. The wife didn't know what to think about it.

At one point I pulled my reserves, and placed them between the advancing confederate forces to give time for the arty to setup, but they just continued to do their chicken dance.

I don't know I just got frustrated by it.

All,

It is this kind of strange, non-military behavior which led me to incorporate all the Artillery into the Divisions. Having the Corps Reserve Artillery go swanning about on its own was just to painful for me to watch. However, this is because I am generally a Division Commander. On the rare opportunity I take command of a Corps, I just might use the OOBs where the Artillery is in a reserve Division on its own, allowing me the pleasure of "sighting the Guns" as it were. (In both ACW and Napoleonic games).
