I am somewhat confused. The brigade level formation shown above has been in the game since release and is on the brigade commanders toolbar.

I was trying to make it work from the Division level. I added it to the DIV Commander bar but couldn't get a regiment to work as a skirmisher for the entire division in march.

Saw Jim's post, and well, I stand corrected. I was thinking brigade level, explained how I didn't think it would work at brigade level...I was flat wrong for it works perfectly, just tested it. Even doesn't switch units when one is detached or whatever. Thanks for the post, I learned something. ;)

As far as division level, I'm just staying mum and maybe I'll learn something. :P

Success! :) I have successfully created a formation for the Division Commander. In essence, it takes modifying the OOB and setting up the skirmish formation to always choose that unit. I took the DIV Line formation and modified it so that the regiment and its commander move out 300 yards in front of the Division. As you move the Div Commander forward, the regiment stays in front. Now to tweak the Division Column formation and the Div Double line formation and add those commands to the Division Commanders Tool Bar.

Still have some work on playability. I will continue to mess around with it until it works 100%

So, did you have to modify the unitglobal file to get this to work, or did you by-pass that file?

I didn't touch that file. Only change I made with unitglobal was to create a commander that walks versus ride his horse. Still have to modify they Flag Bearer to walk as well.

Humm...I would have thought that the following four files would have to be modified to add a unit in the game...
1) unitgfx
2) unitglobal
3) unitmodel
4) OOB

The textures file wouldn't apply here due to the fact that the unit is already listed.

I only modified the Drills.CSV to change an existing formation for the lvl5 and the lvl4 to make skirmishers available to the division commander. I then added the info to the gui.csv to make a button on the division commander the ability to order the formation. I then changed the OOB on a sandbox game (don't have the time right now to redo every OOB) to have a stand alone brigade with a stand alone regiment. This regiment then becomes the Division skirmishers. I currently have it working for the Division Line, and am going to work on making it available for division column and road column formation. Still am tweaking it. It will work on unmoddified OOBs, but what it does is send a whole brigade up as skirmishers with one regiment in skirmisher formation directly in front of the Bde Commander and the other 3 regiments stacked one on top of each other in skirmisher formation just to the left of the 1st regiment. Have to work on it a little more and see if thier is a way (maybe with scripting) to have a button to detach a prescribed regiment and have it move out in front of the division.

Hope this explains it better.

You might want to expand your concept a bit. In the pursuit after Gettysburg, the 6th Corps was following the retreating CS army. Because they happened to be quite good as skirmishers, General Sedgwick ordered that the entire first Vermont brigade serve as skirmishers for the advance of the corps. At the 2nd Battle of Funkstown they were noted for holding off a formal attack by Semmes brigade while staying in skirmish formation along the edge of a woodlot.

I will likely attempt and do that as well. Additionally, during the Confederate Army's retreat from Gettysburg, Rodes took the concept a step further from what he had done during the battle, and put all the Brigades dedicated Skirmishers/Shaprshooters under Maj Blackford and created a demi-brigade to cover the retreat. He then continued that process for the rest of the war. I still wonder if there is a way to create an adhoc unit without creating a seperate OOB entry.

Thanks
