Also, check out Gore Vidal's Lincoln. I did read that and that is historical fiction. I read that a good while ago and it was absolutely mesmerizing! It is all about the "team of rivals" that Lincoln chose for his cabinet and later became the subject of Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals - which, in my opinion, wasn't nearly as up to snuff as Vidal's book.

Huh, I thought Foote at least had end notes, but perhaps not (nobody ever reads them anyway, or footnotes either). He must've been before the era where they were required. And yes, obviously not historical fiction, that was my own tangent.
Seal, if you mean publishing without using citations, count on being laughed out of the room. Then possibly sued for using sources without acknowledgement/permission (ye olde plagiarism). I've seen plenty of historical works that have half (or more) of many, many pages taken up by footnotes.

Shelby Foote is the type of guy to have sitting around a camp fire. The guy is flawless in his story telling...Quite the fella!

I did finally get around to Foote's trilogy - am almost done with the first volume (just finished the 7 days). It is tedious at times but overall it is highly enjoyable - and colorful. Plus, there is not only military history but a fair amount of diplomatic/political history as well. If you are going to tackle something this massive, however, I recommend that you check it out of a library. That way you will be on a strict deadline and will know the exact date that you need to have it finished by. Otherwise, I think, it might be too easy to keep putting it off.
