Davinci,

The problem, I think, is that units only know where other units are at the time they initially plot their path. They do not seem to update it very often. So if unit B moves in front of unit A while unit A is moving, then A unit will blunder into unit B.
Completely Understand!

But, a computer greatest ability is that it can calculate a million different calculations per second.

So, instead of the AI – Divisional – Commander – pulling all of the brigade leaders to his exact position – why not calculate – exactly how much space should be placed between the different brigade leaders.

Basically, let’s say that three brigades are arriving on the field, under AI control.

Each brigade has four regiments assigned to them, so now the game has 15 calculations to align these units. ( 3 leaders + 12 regiments ).

What I am seeing is that the 3 leaders are stopping , and the 12 regiments are now fighting for a line-of-sight. This is a continuous cpu-cycle-routine – that should be avoided!

What if – there were only three original – cycles – needed – by calculating the spacing between the brigades , thus avoiding the continuous cycling of aligning each individual regiment.

Basically, the units would move and act as one cohesive unit while setting up a battle-line, instead of acting as a group of individual regiments that does not seem to be under control.

Now, I understand that this type of control would fade after the battle starts, and the units start to lose some of their effectiveness, but this should not happen at the start of the battle.

A Civil War battle should be at least a mile long battle front – in all of the open play games that I have played, I have never seem this type of battle-front.

We are all aiming for the same thing, we are just taking different steps in reaching our goal, but we all want this game to be the best on the market!

Excellent post Davinci, spot on with your diagnosis!! The brigade/Divison should move as one until deployment

I have also found the regiments are starting to make those twirling movments which I thought had been addressed in a previous patch

I've been working on this the past few nights and Davinci is 100% correct in his analysis. There was a bug in there and also some stuff I can do better. Thank you!

Excellent News, Norb – Thanks for taking to time to look into this, and thanks to the Team members for adding this on the list.

Until, the patch comes out, I did find a slight work around, by removing the Divisional Commander from the OOB.

This spreads the AI out, instead of migrating to one spot on the map.

Now – I really do hate to be a burden, but I have tried a hundred different modding changes, and have not come close to stopping the enemy supply wagon from crossing the front-line.

Will a Supply Wagon – fix make the next patch?

No one that wants to make the game better is a burden.

I believe that there is a bug in there for this. I will look through every bug for the patch.

Davinci,

Great post. The alignment of the divisional brigades should take strategic precedent of LOS to the enemy. I do not think that the AI for the regiments factors this correctly. Individual regiments get side tracked by an enemy unit 160 yds away with 1-2 friendly regiments in between when they would be better served lengthening the line. Perhaps the AI could be tweeked so that it values cohesion of the line above all else. That, as you correctly point out, would take care of a multitude of pathing issues.

Excellent point, the first priority should be a strong battle-line, and then a constant maneuver too attack the left or right of the enemies line.

There is really only three ways that an Army should fight, Center, Left, or to the Right , but is all starts out by first establishing a strong front.

I have been playing around with the Drills file to see if I could alter the way that the enemy deploys once contact is made, but now that Norb has spotted the bug, I think that I’ll hold off on this until the patch is out!

I've been testing Norbs changes and so far I like what I see. This was a great catch Davinci. :)

I'll mention your suggestion in the report as well Gfran64.

OK, Thanks, also is it by default that the Supply Wagon will ignore the settings of the unitglobal file and move at the same speed of the Divisional Commander.

If this invisible link can be broken, that would help solve the supply wagon following the Divisional Commander to the front of the lines.
This is a good report Davinci and I will put in a request to have it looked into. Thanks.

Hey, Norb is extremely busy with the programming, so he relies on you guys to let him know what needs to be fixed, so thank you for adding this on the list!
