Thatis true butI was thinking of it in terms of making it a movement formation you could select if you wished in any battle including open play or sandbox--not as only a one-off modification for one or two special scenario.

I fail to see why moving long distances automatically switches to column formation. That's an order you need to give to move the units in the fashion you need so I don't understand why this thing was done this way.
Perhaps though, increasing the min limit from 100 to 500 yds would make everyone happy. I would like it work that way... personally.

If I want my brigade to advance in line or in column of regiments all the way across the battlefield, that should be my decision. Seems pretty obvious, unless it's a coding issue.

GShock-Thanks for your input---but I really dont see the need to impose any programmed distance limit at all for any unit formation for which we have or we take control .
You can decide which formation they use and for how long according to your tactical plan.If you make a bad choice or decision you will have to live with the consequences. Also in some situations having your lines converted by the programme into columns at a set distance may be very unfavourable to your tactical situation through mo decision of yours.
I would very much favour real independence in this type of decision --umless of course there is an important coding reason of which we are unaware.

I was just meaning that if the programmed distance is 100yds now it could be made 500 without changing things from the way they are now. However I DO stand on the exact point you expressed and Amish John further re-declared: I would like to have my troops march in the formation I assigned without the engine altering it without my orders to do so.
