TC2M has a "Retire by Recoil" button. I presume that will also be included with the new game.

Am also hoping that following a previous discussion regarding "Retire by Prolonge" will also be included...at least in a future patch.

That's good news. I'll be anxious to see how the "retire by prolonge" works. Maybe there will be a small mule whip icon.

You can get farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone.

Thanks, Boston! Very nice description.

When retiring by "Prolonge", the piece would be serviced and loaded while the limber horses pulled the gun to the rear with the men walking and working beside the gun. When ready to fire, they would briefly halt, aim, fire, and immediately continue the rearward movement.

Just to make sure we have our multiple embedded quotes straight, it was LP that said it's in the game. I don't have access to the game.

In the "For What Its Worth" department when infantry advances on unsupported artillery (or the other way around), I offer these morsels as "food for thought":

First, from the records of Battery C, 5th U.S. Artillery in their action at Spotsylvania, 1864: "Lt. Metcalf gave the command, 'Limber the guns,' 'Drivers mount,' 'Cannoneers mount,' 'Caissons rear,' and away we went, up the hill, past our infantry, and into position...We were a considerable distance in front of our infantry, and of course artilley could not live long under such a fire as the enemy were putting through out there. Our men went down in short order. The left gun fired nine rounds, I fired fourteen with mine...Our section went into action with 23 men and one officer. The only onew who came out sound were the Lt. and myself. Every horse was killed, 7 of the men were killed outright, 16 wounded; the gun carriages were so cut with bullets as to be of no further service...27 balls passed through the lid of the limber chest while number six was getting out ammunition. The sponge bucket on my gun had 39 holes in being perforated like a sieve...In a few moments the two brass pieces of the 5th Artillery, cut and hacked by the bullets of both antagonists, lay unworked with their muzzles projecting over the enemy’s works.” [”Battles and Leaders.”] “This is the only recorded instance in the history of the war of a battery charging on breastworks.”

Second, if an opposing infantry begins an advance from 1500 yards distant, it will require approximately 17+ minutes to reach a gun battery. The first 1400 yards are conducted at the Quick Step (or common step). During the first 850 yards, the defending artillery will be able to fire 20 rounds of spherical case in the space of 9 minutes, 53 seconds. During the 300 yards, the defending artillery will fire 7 solid shot in 3 minutes, 29 seconds. Beginning at 350 yards, the defenders will switch to cannister and fire 9 rounds in 2 minutes, 54 seconds. When the infantry is approximately 100 yards from the guns, they will commence advancing at the double-quick (or double time) or charge and cover the ground in appoximately 50 seconds and the artillery will have sufficient time to fire two more rounds of cannister (double cannister in all probability).

Wonder how this will be reflected in the new game.

You would'nt be trying to make a case for the use of double cannister, would ya? The game has been updated, so let's wait and see! Norb did say there was to be a code freeze March 1st.

Great post K!

Interesting mathmatics in the time lenght. I wonder how many men a crack cannon crew could take down in an open field from 1500 yards out to until they were overrun.
