Just to put my two cents in....
The Federals used attack column formation at Spotsylvania Courthouse. I think that Upton was the general that pushed for it and lead it against the fortified salient. The attack overwhelmed the Confederates but the momentum of the attack was stalled because of the large number of Confederate prisoners taken. Lee organized a counterattack and the fiercest hand to hand fighting of the war ensued.

Hi Dale,
Where you been? I knew somewhere on Grant's Overland push that new tactics were being employed, with mixed results, but none-the-less better, I believe, than the debacle of Cold Harbor.
