Dead soldiers and horses

Have tried everything and cannot get the game to show dead bodies

In the options screen there is a "show dead bodies" checkbox; make sure its ticked.

Have you toggled the trees off? Hit the T key a couple of times. The dead bodies are removed as well at the lowest setting for those.

Yes, I have done both. are you saying; if I toggle trees off I am also toggling bodys off as well?

There are 3 reduction levels in graphics when you hit the T key. Only the most severe toggles the bodies off as well. Hitting T repeatedly will cycle you thru the different levels.
