Why is it that enemy commanders can roam about freely on the battlefield with no consequences?
I've even had them pass right thru my formations.
The commanders for the side I play can do the same and roam about where ever they choose to go.
I can see it now. Heth on day 1 takes off and finds Reynolds. Tells him - Hey! Bobby told me he really didn't want to have a full fledged battle here and I wasn't supposed to get decisively engaged so come on Buddy! I graduated last in my class. Cut me some slack. Give me an hour or two and I'll take my guys and head back south. How about it?
Really. This isn't right.
Is there a way to preclude this behavior?
NOTE: No mods installed so that isn't the problem.

Re: Enemy Commanders Can Go Wherever they Please!
not a peep from the devs nor the community.
so either:
1) The community accepts this idiotic command unit behavior as acceptable
2) The devs can't figure out how to justify it
3) I am the only player out of 1000's that finds this unit behavior both annoying and unacceptable.
Either way an otherwise superb product is IMO seriously flawed by this unexplained command unit behavior.

Yeah, it's a flaw. It's "acceptable" inasmuch as the game is still really good. Given that not every flaw can be fixed in a limited amount of time, I bet many of us are happy that other things that have more effect on the gameplay itself get the devs attention before this. Even if that means that this will never be changed.
So yeah, it's bad, but it doesn't matter that much overall.

I agree. I have been improving my skill moving around divisions but it seems at times like you described the commanders just roam around either never reaching objectives or reaching them very slowly. However,I have become more familiar with the mechanics and I have learned that keeping your lines clean without entanglement really improves behavior. To the round tops imo is the best example of what happens if you do not keep formation. Again it is really annoying when commanders commit four units giving chase then being way off point and just seem lost for the rest of the scenario.

I fall into the "doesn't bother me" category. Like Garnier I feel that an enemy commander moving through your lines has no effect at all on gameplay and there's other issues NSD could address that are gameplay critical. It's visually anomalous and mildly annoying but that's all. Its a weird feature but not a game-breaker compared to what else SoW delivers that's very cool indeed. You can also move a unit to kill him if you want.
HITS & Couriers - a different and realistic way to play SoW MP.
