Campaign: Stars and Bars
Fox's Division Report, Battle 22506
Maj Osmun Latrob,
Asst. Adjutant General & Asst. Inspector General: First Corps. Army of Northern Virginia.
MAJOR: I have the honor to submit the following report of the operations of this division during the recent battle.
I was initially ordered to remain in reserve near Trevilian Station.
I then received orders to march West in attempt to cut off the enemy that was reportedly moving north on the Green Spring road.
I quickly moved my division west down the Gordonsville road.
As I approached Trevilian Station, I observed the enemy in division strength turning West down the Gordonsville Road. Since the bulk of division was still several hundred yards to the east, I decided to screen the enemy instead of engaging.
The Union division turned to the southwest into the woods and was no longer in sight. I then deployed my brigades in battle line facing the woods to engage the enemy. My three batteries were deployed in the open ground to the rear.
Soon after entering the woods, a fierce engagement ensued. The woods made the fighting very confusing but my men behaved gallantly.
Just as the day appeared to be ours, the enemy gained the upper hand and I was forced to withdraw my division to the east.
My men retreated in an orderly fashion and were soon joined by Smidt's Division.
The fighting today was some of the most severe of the war with many of my good officers killed and wounded. Although many good men were lost, the enemy appeared to suffer greatly as well.
Very respectfully, your obedient servant,
J. M. Fox,
Major-General, Commanding Division
Longstreets First Corps
Army of Northern Virginia
