Runtime error

Game won't run. Keeps crashing. Hopefully we won't get any posts here, but if we do, we'll try to help you out. You can also post any bugs that you find here. IMPORTANT: Don't post mod related problems here!

Runtime error

Post by cliometrician »

I've been playing SOWG since it came out but I've never had this problem. When I open the game there is the sound of a ding, and the screen just goes black. The error message is a runtime error.

This may or may not be related: In the last two multiplayer games I've played, when I start to download the replay, the screen goes full of different colored stripes, checkerboard patterns, etc. and the computer switches immediately to sleep mode.

Any suggestions on the Runtime Error??

Have you made any recent hardware changes to your PC? Any new virus scanner or other software that would affect your installed programs? Runtime errors can usually be a false positive from a virus scanner, although we haven't seen that issue in a long time (fixed it several patches ago). Also it's possible your game has been corrupted somehow. You can try a re-install over your current install.

I'm really guessing here.....

The sound of a ding is sometimes related to the game not finding a package file.

The Black Screen will probably be related to a corrupt file, or the game not finding a specific file.

The Run-Time error - is sometimes caused by a altered LSL file, or related to a memory problem while loading the game.

The Sleep-Mode would probably be on-your-end - due to the settings of your Computer!

I have no installed any other software recently. I don't know of any way to repair corrupt or altered files. I ran my AVG Disk Doctor but still have the same result.

It appears, then, that I have to reinstall over my current install, cross my fingers, and hope for the best.

AVG software is notorious for messing with game files.

This is probably not related to the problem that you are having, but I did a System Restore which set my Computer back to the state that it was in several months ago.

Once I did the System Restore, it did alter one of the files in the 10MileMap, but I fixed that with no problem.

So, you can try to do a System Restore that pre-dates the time that you were having problems, and see if that helps, other-wise you may have to do as Little Powell mentioned, a complete over-write.

The restore point did not change anything, so I'm going with a reinstall. And the AVG Disk Doctor did not contribute to the problem.

Thanks for the tips.
