Upgrade in computer causes downgrade in game

Game won't run. Keeps crashing. Hopefully we won't get any posts here, but if we do, we'll try to help you out. You can also post any bugs that you find here. IMPORTANT: Don't post mod related problems here!

Upgrade in computer causes downgrade in game

Post by Don »

I have upgraded my computer from Vista to Windows 8. All I get now is the introductory screen, with all the different beginning options covered over in red. How can I fix the problem?

The game hasn't been tested with Windows 8 so it's hard to say.

Try this: Right click on SOWGB.exe in the main folder, go to Properties, select Compatibility...then try Win 7, then Win XP, etc. See what works.

Thanks for the idea. The first screen loaded perfectly; the second didn't, even on Windows 7 compatibility, which for some odd reason is the highest level in the rankings for Windows 8. The second screen showed only 3 options:
Tutorial
Load Saved Game
Back to Main
Of the 3, Load Saved Game did nothing. Returning to the Windows 8 troubleshooter, it registered "incompatible program".
What is really odd is that the tutorials function well.

Now it sounds like you have an outdated version on the game. You should be updated to patch version 1.501...please check. If not, register at Matrix Games and re download the updated version, have your reg codes ready for the install.

My problem therefore would be that I have 2 codes accepted by Matrix & 2 rejected- Gettysburg & Chancellorsville accepted; Pipe Creek & Antietam rejected. I wrote the codes down in a book that I keep, but they still come out rejected, even though they are in my game files. What to do with them?

Please email them to: activate at norbsoftware dot com along with the email address that was active when you bought the games.

I have a related question that I didn't get answered in a different thread. I have registered for the three games I own: GB, Antietam, and CV. GB and Antietam show "Registered" while CV shows "No Downloads Available". Does this mean I'm not registered for that game and why is there no option to download that game to a new computer.

This would be a question for Matrix support. If you have registered CV, but don't have it as an available download, then their tech support would have to look into it. You might want to shoot them an email, I'm sure they can resolve it.

I have both Windows 7, and 8 on my Comp, and what I have found is for some games to work properly in Windows 8 (sometimes including Windows 7) it is best to TURN OFF the UAC, and Run the game FIRST with Admin rights. If crashes still occur, then double down by selecting Windows 7 compat option, if it still crashes, then work your way backwards meaning select Vista, stopping at Windows XP (SP2).

For the majority of the games I play in Windows 8, I seldom jump to the compatibility options because most games will work fine if you have your UAC turned off, and run the game in Admin mode.

Also, one more thing about Windows 8 is ALWAYS run installers with Admin Rights.
