The HOI games are so awesome, that I am slightly intimidated by them.
Everytime i sit down to play them, I think, 'OMG, thats amazing, etc, but I don't have time to play this properly' and shut it down

It really is a great series, I just feel it went downhill with HOI III, you couldn't get countries to switch allegiances as easily in HOI III, which was the cool part of the earlier versions, that you could change history more often than repeating it.

I have never played the series. Maybe I should have from the sounds of it.

It is fantastic.
Getting nations to switch alliances was harder in 3 because you had to exert influence on them to get them closer to your way of life - fascist, communist, capitalist, etc. If they were already allied with one nation it took some serious effort to swing them to your way of life.
Another nice feature, but it was in 2 as well i think, was that you couldn't declare war as a democracy etc unless the people were angry enough. So you had to try and agitate your people or be attacked before you could do any damage!!
Edit: A good one to start with for the military side of things is the Spanish civil war. Although i could never get the Italian and German reinforcements while playing as the Nationalists, i still won. Think encirclement!!

Hmmmm, so in your opinion guys, if I was ever to purchase this game, which edition should it be? 1, 2, 3?
Re: Hearts of Iron III Their Finest Hour [Video]
Alot of the old guard seem to prefer HOI2, but thats the case with alot of games - developers drop features going to new releases without knowing how important they were and the new additions get overlooked.
TBH - I don't know enough about the two to decide. LP played abit of HOI2 and 3 so he might know. Baldwin makes a valid point too..
IMHO - HOI3 looks better and has alot of new features. It is also getting all the new add-ons and mods and the is being pushed etc by paradox.. I never got to deep into it, so you're on you own here Mike
