Multiplayer - Scourge of War - Gettysburg has stopped working

Post by BoldRover »

Hi all

Context:
A few months ago I tried the SOW demo, and after testing multiplayer over my network , I bought 2 activation keys. With the full version, MP over the LAN worked fine with standard scenario's.

Symptom:
It has been some weeks since I MP'ed, but now when I try, I always get "Scourge of War - Gettysburg has stopped working" on my PC, regardless whether I host (which I should becasue it's the better PC) or whether I join. MP lobby and chat work, I can choose scenario and officer etc, but when the game loads my session crashes.

Steps taken:
I checked windows events and get event id 1000, which according to eventid.com is:
This is a very generic error and it doesn't tell much about what caused it. Some applications may fail with this error when the system is left unstable by another faulty program. Usually, a reboot is recommended when this type of error is showing up. If the error is persistent, then one can start digging further (i.e. update the application that is listed in the event), install latest hotfixes, check for viruses and so on.

So I rebooted and checked for viruses, to no avail.

Hypothesis:
I have installed gettysburg_3days_in7hours, NSDSample1 and Gettysburg3dayscarryover on the PC which now doesn't support MP anymore. As far as I can see this is the only difference between the 2 SOW installations involved. But i already "desactivated" those mods by making sure no squares appear before their names. Also, I just try to MP on standard scenario's which are available on both PCs and not on these mods.

Neverthleless is there a way to "uninstall" these mods? Does anyone have any other siggestions?

Thanks in advance & regards.

If the mods are disabled then they are effectively uninstalled. Have you tried re-installing your game? It's possible something has become corrupted. First just try to install over your current install. If that doesn't work, uninstall, then re-install.

Do not re-install to the Program Files folder.

Hi Guys.

Thank you for your prompt replies.

1. Re-installing over the existing files did not work (same symptom).
2. Re-installing to "program files" after uninstalling did not work (same symptom).
3. Re-installing to the default NorbSoftDev-folder after uninstalling worked. I had to regrant network access to SOW as well.

Initially the folder location had no impact whatsoever on MP-functioning. I know you guys did not recommend that location, but because my own tests (with demo version and licensed version) worked, i used that folder anyway. I just don't like to create a folder for every company I buy software from B) .

On my other PC I keep the install in "program files" since it still works there.

I guess adding the mods somehow must have triggered the "program files"-issue? Is that at all plausible? Or just coincidence?

Thanks again for the help.
