A Bugles and Flags v10 Observation

This is where our experts try to teach you the very flexible modding system for our previous release - SOW Gettysburg and its add-ons. It's powerful, but dangerous. Post your tips and your questions.

A Bugles and Flags v10 Observation

Post by cliometrician »

I love Bugles and Flags, probably the best Mod for the game, but I have one major problem with v10. The regiment icons are so small that I find myself leaning forward or squinting to see them. Did anyone over age 50 test those icons? :) (I'm well over 50 and have reading glasses, so I can't use them for the monitor unless I get really close to the screen)

I would like to go back to v9 just for the larger unit icons, but I can't seem to find the link. Can someone please post it here? Thanks.

Ah, just to make clear, I'm speaking of the Command Map.

Ha, I'm 64 and farsighted, and I embrace the small icons, because now they don't look like a cluster of balloons, I can actually see the formations line up now. This was a request by someone, I think Boles, I did them for him, then I adopted it in my mod. I know it's hard to read the specific info, but for me the pin point locations are far more important.

Another thing, I tried to make them a little bit larger, but they overlapped, hence, the small size.

Anyway, just delete or rename Map_Icons.tga (Graphics\Screens\Map_Icons.tga), that will get you back to stock. And, since I lectured on this already, you get it too...Learn to Mod if you want it your way...this is an easy fix.

Thanks for the excellent plug. Made my evening. :)

RB,

Can I be a HUGE Richard Cranium here and ask how come the Federal National Colors aren't square? (Yes, other people, I am well aware they were actually 6 feet by 6 feet 6 inches, but - think about it.) It is otherwise a GREAT mod, which I am enjoying immensely.

Reb B. Thank you for the tip. I deleted the Map Icon.tga and now I can see again! You have me by two years, but my vision must be nearsighted. :)

All my Union regulation flags were taken from this source, it is the GB Union Flag bible:

I agree Reb. It makes a difference when you can see how the lines are lined up. You can move into place when linking up your division to the engaged division.

RB,

Understand, I am NOT trying to be a dick here.

Yes, that is correct as far as it goes - but, what is pictured is a "Headquarters" Flag. There were no really specific regulations for these flags.

I quote U.S. Army Regulations - Each Regiment was to have "two silken Colors. The first, or the national color, of stars and stripe; the name and number of the regiment to be embroidered with silver on the centre stripe. The second, or regimental color, to be blue, with the arms of the United States embroidered in silk on the centre. The name of the regiment in a scroll, underneath the eagle. The size of each color to be six feet six inches fly, and six feet deep on the pike. The length of the pike, including the spear and ferrule, to be nine feet ten inches. The fringe yellow; cords and tassels, blue and white silk intermixed."

I am referring to Regimental colors. Any of the others can be whatever, because, very often, they were.

Also, I own two. National Colors of the 14th. Indiana Volunteers and the 7th. West Virginia Volunteers. They are both direct copies of the originals.

I really like the unit icons. It IS nice to be able to see the formations lining up. The "balloon" analigy is great.

Yeah Jack, agreed. In fact, I had a square national designed first, but then was steered to this thread above by higher up team members, so I made the rectangle design you now see in Turbo Flags.

Fear not, for with Pea Ridge, coming soon, the almost square version is represented, plus I have other square versions available upon request, or whatever, that will be eventually released.

Curious, should Turbo Flags be incorporated into Bugles and Flags?...pretty easy meld, and would make both more MP compatible.

Downside: all the brigade through corps regulation (stock Union flags) would be killed, Turbo Flags does this, but not Bugles and Flags.

Upside: Much better FPS producing smoother gameplay overall
