1942 Task Force (Microprose 1992). First Naval Battle Simulator I ever played [Video]

This is a very cool Battleship Simulator that came out around 1992, and it was made by the king of combat simulator's Microprose. The nighttime battles can be allot of fun but don't think this game is a push over. It's full campaign is simply brilliant. You have to manage supplies, transfer troops, command entire fleets, and the list goes on, and on.
Even by today's standards this game will hold it's own, and just to think the Microprose Team coded this game, and packed all this gaming goodness on a couple of 5 1/4 floppies where today games need 10 gig of your HD space to play, and the majority of them are just not all that great.

When I posted the game for download on my site at that time it was abandon-ware.that looks pretty good! is it abandonware?

Haaaaaa, welcome to the MS-DOS dimension.
Side effects of the DOS dimensional shift are:
Unquenchable thirst for old dos games...
Inflated head from numerous hours of gaming goodness...
Finger twitching from over working your index finger...
Joystick fatigue (for those who don't know what a joystick is, it normally has a flat bottom with a stick poking out of the center)...
Bulbous looking left eye...
...much more.
Please consult your doctor before playing any DOS games.

Gawd. It looks terrible! Were people really satisfied with that 15 years ago? I guess we must have been!

I think imagination had a big role to play. I remember practically salivating waiting for 'space crusade' on the C64. A reviewer had described 3d FPS graphics that probably aren't even available now - laser beams flying past your face etc.
When i got it, the game looked like this.

But man... I could FEEL those laser beams
Imagination is the way to go. I'm busy working on an imagination mod. No changelog so you're kept in suspense and no changes to the files either....but people will think that something great has been added. :laugh: :laugh:

Your absolutely right con20or, it was the imagination that filled in all of those gaps (today's technology can't even come close to what your imagination can come up with). When I played Mechwarrior, I heard in my head metal against metal, rockets slamming into your hull, laser beams tearing through the air, and searing through your armor plating as you plugged forward. Even though the sound effects were PC-Speaker based you actually heard those sounds play out in your head as you battled it out, and when you took out another mech, and seen them fall to the ground, I actually felt the ground shake (in my head), and seeing sand being thrown up into the air.I think imagination had a big role to play. That is also why text based games were so popular because you were filling in those gaps (taking part in an interactive novel), and man I can remember some really cool text games such as Pirates, and many others that literally kept me up at night trying to figure out why I can't do something.
Nothing beats the imagination.... best part it's totally free!

Here is an example of what I mean by using your imagination. This game is called venture. I use to go to the Video Arcade to play this game back in the 80's (before, during, and after work) in my local Mall where I worked (MicMac Mall for those who live in Halifax, or Dartmouth). I can't tell you how many quarters I put into this machine.
Even though the Venture game I just recorded is for the Colecovision, the game is identical to the Video Arcade version.
