Pathing!

Game won't run. Keeps crashing. Hopefully we won't get any posts here, but if we do, we'll try to help you out. You can also post any bugs that you find here. IMPORTANT: Don't post mod related problems here!

Pathing!

Post by Kerflumoxed »

Have just finished a Hits and Couriers game designed by Saddletank. Great game....except for PATHING! Would it be possible to provide a sensible pathing alternate or, at most, shut the damn thing off? Personally, I am awfully tired of having a regiment ordered to move across unobstructed ground with no intervening troops, only to have them do a 360 degree circle and march off to hinderlands! It is exasperating to say the least. WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Thanks

Here's how I do it:

If it's not clear how to do this, let me know, I can try to explain it in more detail.

Using this technique any unit can walk on the exact path you want through any obstacles except buildings.

Do you know which button or option shows the pathing (v) icon. Mine seem to have gone away since one of the patches. It would be nice to make sure they are headed the right way when maneuvering them.

Update: never mind, it's in battle options: "show road path icons"

Another trick is to give the regiment (especially if in line) a movement order to right behind a friendly regiment. Then when the regiment gets right behind the other regiment, you can give them a movement order past them.

If your moving in an open field and not going past a friendly unit, don't march in line formation.

That's how it has to be done with waypoints as well, except you give both orders at once.

Yes. . . but I rarely use waypoints. I simply march them right behind the near end of a regiment then decide where to send them. I'm usually moving more than one, so especially if they're moving into or close to rifle range, I don't often plot through. I'm usually hoping they get los along their path. But I guess if you're just moving and not close, it's a good thing. Staying out of line is the most important thing. Line paths horribly.

Any formation can move on the exact path you want, either with waypoints or short repeated move orders. So if I'm moving them at the front I'd probably keep them in line. (in GCM that is -- in stock I used to use skirmish for the extra 30% speed)

In yesterday's game, I had one regiment on a fence line firing with the 2nd regiment a few dozen yards behind. As Mark mentions, I wanted to move the 2nd regiment behind the firing regiment with no other intervening troops nor terrain obstacles. When I gave them the move order, they march a few steps forward and then began their pathing dance, circling and dancing about for several minutes while I fussed and fumed! Because of the relatively short distance, I had no suspicion that they would do anything but simply move forward behind the firing regiment. Boy, was I surprised! This has repeatedly happened and is giving me consideration to discontinue playing SoW until this continuous problem is repaired.

I will try the suggestions Garnier and Mark have made and see if it makes any difference. Undoubtedly, they have better insight in eliminating this "gamey" problem than I have.

Thanks
