I think it's ultimately random with modifiers for the retreating unit's morale, fatigue, proximity to enemy troops, etc. So if they get lucky on the dice roll they might run through your troops.

I don't know for sure if this matters, but try to get the flags as close as possible. When an enemy unit is running, etc move a regiments flag into the path of the running/routing regiment. Flag to flag should get you your surrenders. They do not have to touch, but close is what you want.

Yeah, with Sid Meyers GB surrounding did the trick because retreating units could not go through enemy troops. Remember how those retreating troops started bouncing around, then more, and more...eventually into a swarming beehive...then the white flags started popping up...Ah, the essence of gamey.

With SOW that gamey is gone, surrounding increases the odds of capture, but to guarantee capture, ya gotta run 'em down when they're retreating. And cavalry is best for this. ;)

As long as you get the routing units flag to cross directly over your regiments flag you should have a 100% capture rate. Unless the running regiment still has some fight left in em,then you get a melee.

I try and play 'capture the flag' but the routers sometimes turn aside.
