Backing Up

Having just recovered from a massive SOWG crash several months ago and having had to restart from scratch, I am now very focussed on data backups and how to manage them..

I would just like to confirm the rules for backing up files vis-á-vis activation.

(1) The activation code remains effective only if the game folder is maintained with exactly the same Path on the same computer.
(2) If I backup the game folder elsewhere then that folder remains de-activated.
(3) If the files in the original game folder become corrupted, I can delete them and replace them with the similarly-named backed up files, without losing the activation in so doing.

Have I got that right ?

1) Yes.
2) Yes, but you won't be able to activate the backup.
3) Yes and no. You can replace the files but you probably will lose the activation.


Some tips from the readme:

* Do not move the game's folder, do not upgrade or reinstall your operating system, do not use System Restore, and do not change hardware components of your computer without deactivating the game first.

* How to properly uninstall/reinstall the game:
On uninstalling the game it will ask you if you want to keep the game activated or not.
If you choose to keep it activated don't touch, move or delete the remaining game folder.
If you need to reinstall the game you don't have to uninstall it, just reinstall the base game and then the latest patch over the current installation.

* If you encounter problems with installed mods, just uninstall the mod. You don't have to reinstall the game because no mod can modify the game's stock data files.

OK thanks for the prompt reply.

So it is better then if I deactivate the corrupt game first and then re-activate after replacing the files.

If the crash is bad enough to prevent deactivation then I can only replace the delinquent files and beg the help of Support.

Ah, but it won't happen again, will it ? Hope I never have to test it.
