Why can my friend and I not play?
Honestly, I've only purchased the game in order to be able to play historical battles with a friend, and now I can't even do that. it is practically impossible to host a server and you must go through some website. For the amount of money spent on the game, you would think my friend and I (who have our computers connected with a LAN cable) would be Simpy able to enter a lobby, choose McPherson's Ridge and play.

As i have said before , only a select few can host. try having ten people ready to play a game and no one can host.Honestly, I've only purchased the game in order to be able to play historical battles with a friend, and now I can't even do that. it is practically impossible to host a server and you must go through some website.
what is this about going through a website?? if you are referring to the GCM website that is a group of us who play with and everyone needs the mod to play there. other then that there is nothing i know of involving a website.

If you are going over LAN, you should be able to just direct connect (no need for the lobby). So you host the game, give your friend your IP address, he direct connects, and it should work. It's been a while since I have played direct connect, but that should be all there is to it.For the amount of money spent on the game, you would think my friend and I (who have our computers connected with a LAN cable) would be Simpy able to enter a lobby, choose McPherson's Ridge and play.

Mich,
LP is right. All you have to do is connect via IP address before you enter the main lobby, "waiting area," as it were. You will connect directly to each other, then...Game On! Bon Chance!

Re: Why can my friend and I not play?
It always bugs me how angry people seem to be on the internet, being rude and overly aggressive with the very first post of a request thread. I've seen it a few times on this forum and when people help them out there's almost never a word of thanks. I've seen it far more often on other developers forums.

Re: Why can my friend and I not play?
I realize that with the advent of larger companies and console companies running dedicated servers, it's a cost we cannot afford. So we do it old school per say. The host must have an open port to their machine. It was pretty common not too long ago and is still common in many games. One open port, but since everyone is behind a router these days it becomes very hard. Also many internet companies prevent people from hosting on purpose. They don't allow connections to machines in their sub net. You can cannot out of their sub net, but not into it. We have one guy on the team that runs fine when he connects to us, but we cannot connect to him. The speed is horrible. This can only be done at the ISP level and we know it's not the game because we see the same thing with other non-game programs (like remote desktop). There is nothing tricky that we do. I wish I knew a way to give more people the ability to host and I think it's something we will continue to work on. Lan games will have no problems at all, also there are several solutions offered on this site, like creating a vpn.

Re: Why can my friend and I not play?
All,
I would like to say in the early days of this marvelous game, I was able to host regularly, with a far inferior machine than I have now. (Remember those days, Garnier?) I have a router, but I seem to have no problem when I host games and play with one of my sons. (About all I have time for these days.) If you are having problems, look to your own equipment first. Try and stop whining. How old are you people anyway? 11, 12...?

So if you plug your pc directly into your wireless router with a physical cable will you be able to host?

Re: Why can my friend and I not play?
Yes. As long as you open a port in your router settings for the game (we usually use 31791), you will be able to host. A great site that tells you how to open a port for virtually any router model is:
http://portforward.com/
Note: I have seen some router models (like Belkin) that have a DMZ security feature. If you have tried everything and still can't host, you probably need to enter your local IP address (the 192 address) in the DMZ field in the settings. I have to do this for my router to host.

Hi I recently with the routers online help team was able to sort my hosting issues so if youbare struggling it might pay to ask for a little help there I found I also needed to have a static ip address which some isp's will be all to willing to help you set up.
