Since we've gone to total points to determine victory, the old sacrifice a regiment to turn an objective ploy is rarely worth it anymore. Objectives are usually 500 or 1000 points depending on who's hosting (I set them at 500).For the stock game, skirmish formation is faster than column, so you could switch to skirmish when you get to 100yd, and then run through the enemy line, then switch to line for charges.
Not that the "disallow formation within x yards of enemy" wouldn't be a good thing to try.

Re: Engine Craziness...
Coming back to the earlier topic of this thread for a moment, I thought I should report that I lost my general to enemy fire in a SP game last night. Sandbox, Alpine map. I was attacked by an much inferior force, beat it, and thought I would ride around the map to see if there were any more enemy troops.
Found some a long way from the scene of the battle. I of course rode up to take their salute in my usual cheeky manner, and was promptly shot! First time it's ever happened to me. The enemy were not in action at the time. In fact my nearest troops were about 3 miles away.
So unless I'm imagining things, there must be something in the code already. So all that's needed on that front is to tweak the probabilities. That wouldn't address Garnier's point on the behaviour of AI generals however.

How far away was your general from the enemy unit?

Probably about 200 yds.

Pics or it's fake! LOL (j/k)
You're certainly a case all your own! In the 200-plus MP fights I've been in not once have I had a leader killed unless it came into approximate physical contact with an enemy unit ... same for other players.

Yep. Couldn't believe it myself :silly:
No pics unfortunately.
I suppose it could have been less than 200 yds, but don't think so. And in any event there was no fight, and I didn't see or hear any firing. But the effect was the same as when I've previously been shot in a firefight. I was re-located back with the main force as a captain or something, instead of a Lt General.
I'll try and recreate it later, as I still have the scenario saved at an earlier point.

Re: Engine Craziness...
Right. I have recreated most of what happened, although in a different place on the map. I haven't been able to recreate my resurection as a mere captain, but I have again managed to get myself shot (or maybe captured?) in the Union rear and far away from any fighting.
I have a 5 page word doc with 10 screenshots. This shows, in sequence, a last look back at my own troops as I ride off in search of the enemy. The approach of an enemy column as I sit on a road and wait for it. The newspaper report from Harper's Weekly when I'm shot. The enemy column passing. My body on the ground. The last of the enemy column disappearing down the road. My OOB post-shooting which shows -10 VPs. Not sure whether the latter is for my leader loss or the enemy holding a minor objective, but it does show there have been no other casualties.
Who do I send this to?
Have also saved the game, post shooting, if anyone's interested.

Yeah ... you'll lose points for leader loss.

Re: Engine Craziness...
It's really hard to see 'cause the shots are so small, but it looks like your commander was touched by a Union regiment.
